Apple's Steve Jobs might be jealous of new Droid with neato multitasking capability (sp?) until maybe next gen iPhone will come out with multitasking capability?

With the Droid superior to the iPhone in every way, what will Apple's response be, I wonder? Apple always never cuts prices to compete, playing up their 'elite' status and shiny designs.

Pending some hands on time, I fully intend to give up my iphone and buy a droid. Mainly because of the more open development model of android, multitasking, and the ability to install apps that are rejected from the apple app store (Google Voice).

Sadly no.. my local verizon stores claim they haven't received them yet.

I pre-ordered at best buy, but they don't know when they will get them.. so I may just buy it at verizon instead.

I pre-ordered two at best buy.. I was told that they will have at least 20, and I'm 4th in line.

If they fail to pull through, I will go to the mall and get my 2 friday morning.

I'm so excited.

Or, you can wait 4 days, and not have to mail in the $100 rebate. No waiting for the rebate + less sales tax = worth a couple of days without a new phone.

my ex tests all the new phones for the company she works for, she should be getting two either today or tomorrow to test. ima bite the bullet and go play with them for a while see how i like it.

i do like the phone overall, and the car mode is plain coolness in a can from what ive seen. id have to see how it works against what i use my omnia for tho.

I have read that you are limited to 256mb of application installations since Android does not allow you to install to a SD card. Anyone know if this is true? I will be probably be getting one either way.

Android, by default, installs applications to main memory - but the applications are pretty small, how many do you REALLY need on the device at once? The G1 had maybe 40 MB of application memory and I didn't fill that up.

However, there are 3rd party applications (apps2sd) that will store your applications on the SD card. I don't know that apps2sd is available in the Android Market though, I had it pre-installed with a custom ROM from xda.

Thanks for the reply. I have a Windows Mobile phone right now and it is really slow and sluggish and I well.. Hate it. I want something different. Thats why I thought this may be a good alternative. Especially since Verizon and Alltel are my only options here.

Anyone know if Verizon still lets you return and kill a contract if you're not happy within 30 days or whatever it used to be?

I'm thinking of jumping back to them but if I doesn't work well for my corp email/calender/contact needs then I'll probably go back to my iPhone.

yep, i asked about this on friday, and again on saturday.
i'm jumping ship from sprint to verizon.

i was told that if i canceled and returned within 30 days there would be no charge; however if i exchanged my phone there was be a restocking fee.

I just checked with my local Verizon store. Apparently I dont get out of my contract until Nov 5th. Luckily thats the day before the Droid comes out. BUT they are not taking pre-orders, its first come, first serve.

I WILL HAVE ONE!!

you can pre-order at best buy - but check to see how many are on the list and how many they'll be getting.

people over at fatwallet in the droid pre order thread are posting mixed results as for getting the new every 2 discount applied at best buy though.

So I can't find a straight answer for this.
Since the hardware apparently supports multi touch and the GSM version will be getting it off the bat will there be a chance of this supporting pinch zoom in the future?

From Verizon? Probably not - but there will undoubtedly be custom ROMs that can do it. I had multitouch pinch zooming on the G1 with a custom ROM.

Eventually, maybe, perhaps.
This is yet another reason to go with T-mobile because they dont lock down their phones like Verizon does.
Of course, when the Droid comes out it will pretty much put the G1 and MyTouch into the obsolete category, so maybe its better to go with the Droid and see if you can hack it to do what you like. Out of the box Android is more moddable than the iPhone or Pre or any Blackberry.

I will be getting this on release day. My contract expired a month ago, but I knew that there would be some good smart phones coming for Verizon so I waited. Looks like it was a good call. I think I'll order online to avoid having to mail in a rebate. The only thing I'm not sure of is if accessories will be available for purchase at the stores or online as well.

iPhone has a better UI and a MUCH better app store, this Droid isn't even close to better than an iPhone on every level lol. Also this is just a matter of personal preference but I think the Droid is butt ugly. I'd still like to try one, but does have some better specs, but it's definitely not better than an iPhone IMHO - I sold my iPhone BTW so I'm not an Apple Fanboy

straight from the boygeniusreview

As we said, it’s second only to the iPhone as far as capacitive screens go, and coupled with the rest of the DROID, it’s a real winner. Screen might be higher resolution but I agree with reviewer, the screen's still not as good overall.

He was referring to the responsiveness of the touch screen, not the look. The Droid has almost triple the pixel density of the iPhone - its considerably sharper, bigger, and according to your same review, possibly the best looking screen on the market.

The responsiveness of the touch is attributed equally to the software, which is improving rapidly with each release of Android.

The number of apps in the Android Market is pretty impressive considering its largely built around the G1s population. I've said before - get a few solid devices out on bigger carriers, and that number will increase drastically.

I'm due for a new cell plan and was just going to go for a free phone with $30/month service... until I saw this. Now I'm coming up with excuses to get one. The price of the phone is easily worth it - it'll act both as an mp3/video player and a car GPS - those two combined are worth well over $200. The only thing that's stopping me is the extra $30/month for the data plan (I have a discounted rate). I don't really NEED one, but it looks like a ton of fun.

I've already got someone waiting on my iPhone.. and I'm not a very patient person I'd actually like to have $100 coming to me later down the line..

I may just get it at best buy, but I'm not decided yet.

I'm debating if I want to get it on my ex's line b/c it qualifies, then just switch the phones and drop her line at the end of my contract.

It would mean a few more months of paying for the extra line though....
