You can't really use those "purchased online coupons" at a B&M though, and you can't do ink recycling online, so I think your deal is kind of iffy myself.

I already have purchased this modem via this deal. It's meant for Staples.com purchases and the recycling checks you get have a code in there that you can enter online too. It does work. Obviously you can do this at a B&M store too, but you need a coupon that in valid in-store and you won't get the 3% cash back for using the shopping portal.

Have to buy a coupon, have to buy and store empty printer cartridges, have to have an AMEX. Too much trouble. Just buying the cartridges will negate any savings. Then there's the gas usage.

You have to buy a coupon if you don't have one, like most Staple deals. The hardcore Staples hot deal seekers always has a ton of ink carts in reserve. It's a one-time fixed cost and pays in multiples over time.

You're right, the amount per recycled ink has gone down, but it still can be $240 a year. Previously, it was unlimited at $3 per cart... the good old days ::sigh::
$20 a month/$240 a year for members
$40 a month/$480 a year for Staples Premier members (those who spend $1,000 in a year)

Problem is, the coupon isn't free if you don't already have one (most people). So it's not $12.29. And the beer cans and quarter are just as valid as some of the other parts mentioned.
