You're not going to get this deal unless you add an entirely separate line. Voicestream/Cingular/et al pay commissions (which is what Staples is basing the rebate on) based ONLY on activation of a new line. They don't pay the reps (in this case, Staples) any commissions just for getting you to upgrade.

You may possibly be able to get a discount on the phone directly from cingular/voicestream if you upgrade your plan, but they're definitely not going to give it to you for free.

Here is the skinny. I went to CT and picked up the V60T as the NY store was clueless about the rebates. Cingular said it piggybacks AT&T's TDMA network, which is not available in NY, and I would have to get a CT #. Went to the local NY store and swapped for V60G GSM phone. They did it even though the manager said it would not work for me (ha ha). Turns out they do have $140 Staples rebate along with the $120 Cingular but did not have the $40 instant in their system.

$329.99
- $40 Instant
- $140 Staples
- $120 Cingular for 2 year committment

Total price $29.99 and an extra hour of wasted time. Worth the $40 though.

Thanks Aos. Glad I saw this as my T61Z is to be delivered today straight from Cingular for $30. Gee, which is a better deal? Duh!

Just for clarification:

In NYC Cingular piggy backs on the Voicestream network, until they can build all their own towers. This is what the Staples employee told me FWIW. The phone that I got, was indeed, the V60G, which is the gsm model of this phone. I guess cingular may be piggy backing on various other cell phone networks in the nation, until they get all their own equipment in place. Which is why in NYC, a ton of cingular shops popped up, literally overnight. So this deal might be for different models of the v60 depending on where you are geographically, and what cell phone network that Cingular may be piggybacking on, in your area.

I'm glad this deal is working out for so many of you. I think this is either my first or second deal posted.

To boot, my old Voicestream Samsung would only work on 1900, where this V60g works on 800, 1800 and 1900. Best of both worlds.

Just wished I had known a couple of days earlier because my $30 off $150 ran out on 8/3.

Cingular uses Voicestream towers in NYC. Cingular launched in NYC not too long ago. Cingular has some great international rates when you compare it to Voicestream's international rates. Add on top of that, Cingular has night minutes - something Voicestream is test marketing in select markets (Chicago is one of them, but NYC is not).

You can get the V60g free from Amazon.com after rebates. If you hook up with the Voicestream version of the phone, just remember its a crippled phone. Also, as an added bonus: www.speakmoto.com and www.moremoto.com if these are applicable to you. Free speakerphone attachment and free istream respectively.

Amazon is also selling the T68 which looks like an awesome phone. I only wish I waited to get this one, but hey.. if anyone wants to swap, let me know. My V60G is only two months old - I also had to do a warranty exchange since the original that I got from Amazon wasn't working.

btw: Cingular is also selling the Motorola V70.

The only way to go if you travel off the beaten path is either Verizon with CDMA , or ATT with the TDMA and metro GSM service, CDMA is the only way to go. I have no problem paying for a phone, all that matters to me is that my calls go through, I sound like I am on a landline phone while doing 80MPH, and I can get digital coverage 95% of the time anywhere in the nation, with 5% on analog. AT least with Sprint, if you go off the beaten path you roam on to the Verizon network. Quality it what counts, for some people Cingular is ok, I had it in LA when it was Pac Bell Wireless good coverage until I got off the major highways to smaller towns. Cingular is kind of screwed because half the network is TDMA Bell South and the rest is GSM, until a GAIT phone comes out that works on both networks still a waste of money to still use a TDMA network, eventually they will convert it all to GSM, then UMTS, that is long way away.

I'm getting the voicestream version of this phone for $0.00 and your intitial "crippling" comments scared the heck out of me.

I don't consider not being able to swap a chip and use another network "crippled".

I can't think of a single reason as to why I would want to do this.

Consider it the cost of getting a "free" phone. Voicestream gives me the phone for free, I use their network.

Sounds fair to me?

inkspoof,

Where can I find the international calling rates for Cingular? I found the international roam, but not the international calling from the US. And what do you mean by "crippled"? The guy at the store said that they would unlock my phone for me by giving me the code (v60g). IMHO, the lack of night minutes in the voicestream plan, which start at 9 on cingular by the way, is made up for by the twice as much peak minutes they give you in California.

- 80.00 (Cingular 1 year Contract Rebate)
- 30.00 (staples 30 off 150 Coupon)
