Motorola was also worried about using an OS like Windows Phone that is not open source. “We would like an opportunity to create unique value and we don’t feel we could with a closed platform,” she said. Going with Windows Phone would create a scenario where the only value Motorola could offer was commoditized hardware, she said.

Pot, meet kettle.

Translation: We want to brand our devices with our apps and UI and don't want to be held hostage by Microsoft.

If I had Motorola UI (read skin) first thing I would want to do is to remove it.

But I see their point, there's much more customization on android.

Unless you have one of their more recent or future phones. Hence what Bat said.

Lest anyone forget, Motorola released the ROKR phone. Knowing how Apple operates, I'm sure Motorola had to make a few concessions. Motorola obviously doesn't believe WP7 is going to make them any money and that is the only reason why Motorola isn't releasing a WP7 phone.

Motorola locks bootloaders like no other though. I mean other stuff is locked, but damn they're crazy on locking.

BTW, a lot of it comes with the TI OMAP system. That's why the iPhone 3GS was so difficult to JB too especially when they came with teh bootloader lock from week 43 and later.

I'm wondering if the shift to Tegra with the Atrix makes the security any less? Who knows.

Why focus on other platforms when you already have a free, customizable, and popular one you've been working on for over a year and that single-handedly brought your company back from the dead with the original Droid? Especially when WP7 lacks any definingly astounding features that would sway manufacturers to a more immature OS.

I seem to recall Motorola potentially agreeing to make WP7 phones because that grants them license to various patents Microsoft owns (and they currently use without license in their Android phones).

I can see Nokia and MS pooling their patents and suing Android device makers to try to slow Android's momentum.

Uh, Android device makers don't need any help slowing the momentum of the platform. They slow it down enough themselves with their customizations and then the carriers requiring they sign off and add their bloat. That's a big reason why the NoDo update got delayed.
