We just purchased a new house, moving out of our condo, and my Dear Wife has decided that I am in no way, allowed to keep floor or stand mounted speakers in her new house. I currently have an older Onkyo 5.1 set that is about 15 years old, it's worked well for me in the past, with the small living space of the condo, but since I'm not allowed to put the speakers in the wall, it looks like i'm going to have to mount them in the corners of the room. Not an ideal placement or location, but it is what it is. It is an open floor plan in the new house, so there are only about 2.3 walls in the living room, which measures 17'10" wide by 15'5" deep. The TV is on back wall mounted over the fireplace, the center channel will sit on the mantle. Front speakers will be located Approximately 8' from the TV on either side of center, the rears will be located on a beam that runs and separates the living space from the dining room behind it. The whole back of the room is open, as is about 9' of the left side of the room, which opens into the kitchen. Making it difficult to bounce sound off walls. Also, it's a cathedral type ceiling, running the width of the room.
I am using a Yamaha HTR-5960 for my receiver. The Onkyo center still sounds great, the sub is decent, so for the time being, I'd like to keep those, and concentrate on replacing the 2 fronts and 2 rears, as the old ones are simply too big to be mounted and look good. Any recommendations? Money is a bit tight having purchased the new house (hence the sub <$500 budget), and all the expenses that go with it, I'm planning to replace the whole system in 3-5 years, once we get our condo sold, and get through all the fun expenses of first moving in.
I've looked at Bose 161's & Polk OMW 3's, but havn't had the opportunity to hear either, there aren't any decent showrooms around me that let you listen anymore.
