Mounting IDE drives vertical ?

okay I might get myself a Directron SF-201-B case (if u seen my lian Li thread, this is an alternative but I wanna know an anser on this question first) , BUT it has a vertical drivebay (drives sitting on their sides)

I just wanted to know, doesnt this affect the lifespan of the drive ? (because I can imagine the drive arm engine has to work harder when it has to beat gravity, and how should I mount it then, with arm down so it fals down when shut down or with arm up ?

It always has been my understanding that the physical orientation of the hard drive has no consequential effect on the life of the hard drive. I use a Lian-Li case with my drives mounted 90 degrees from the normal orientation.

A lot of dell hard drives are mounted long end up. And they work just fine, so dont worry my friend.

My HD (dell) was up on it's side. I had to move it when I put my burner in. I didnt' notice a difference either way.

AHHHHHH!!!! I got this case, and I love it. Anyway, the harddrive(s) sit in it it's(their) own slide out drawer kind of thing. The drawer holds 5 harddrives. The 2 front cooling fans blow across the harddrives (my deststar 10k rpm has yet to go over 18c) nice and cool.
I've noticed no difference in noise from the drive being mounted vertically, and I know of several manufactures( exspecially mini cases) that mount the drives vertically without issue.
