Mouse and Keyboard Freeze

Hi everyone, I just built a new system

AMD Sempron 3100+
Chaintech VNF3-250 NForce3 Motherboard
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro

I have all new drivers installed as "Device Manager" shows no devices left uninstalled

While playing games, the PS/2 keyboard and mouse will stop reponding. Everything else will be normal (for example, if I was running, my character will slow down before stopping). Replugging the keyboard and mouse does not help. Power is still going to the keyboard and mouse (Numlock still green, optical mouse still glowing red)

Has anyone ever experienced this problem, and know what the problem may be?

What power supply are you using (brand/model)? Do you have all windows updates installed along with anti virus software. Do you realize that ps/2 ports are not hot plugable meaning they should not be unplugged/plugged in while the machine is running.

I realize that PS/2 ports are not hot pluggable. They kick out while they are plugged in

List your complete system specs. Any games in particular? Do you have the power supply hooked up to the video card and everything else correctly?

PS2 ports WILL die if they get shorted and are extremely fragile, simply tugging on a keyboard or mouse cable can kill one (rare but happens).

Try switching to or borrowing a USB Keyboard and mouse combo and see if it keeps happening. You can pick one up off of newegg cheap, or go to your local Circuit City, CompUSA, Walmart, CostCo, BJs or Staples.

Just to check, you've tried different keyboards and mouses, right?

I don't know what other information would be helpful (case anyone?!)
Happened on Doom3 and Counter Strike, so I don't believe game choice is an issue.
I believe I have all power hooked up properly (video card fan runs) Are there any common errors I should look for?
My system runs very cool, so heat shouldn't be a problem, but voltage might be. How can I test voltage failures?
I have tried multiple mice / keyboards.
When mouse is in USB and keyboard is in PS/2, only keyboard dies.
By the way, the keyboard and mouse don't get "fried" or "shorted" completly. They work upon reboot.


Recommendation time: If the problem doesn't surface with USB input devices, should I tolerate the workaround, or RMA something (but what?) from Newegg / manufacturer.

Installed WinXP
- Rendering with OpenGL is slow in WinXP
- Lock still occurs
