I just spoke to a friend that has a Logitech mouse that is acting funny. She is running Windows XP. She says that it is inconsistent, for example, if she right clicks to bring up a menu, sometimes it does and sometimes it doesnt. What is worse, is sometimes when she left clicks, it doesnt do anything either. She explained to me that she went to the X to close an application and she had to click several times before it would actually click the X to close the application.

She said that this happened a few weeks ago so she went and bought a new mouse and still same symptoms. She took her computer in to have it looked at and they tested the memory, hard drive and replaced the power supply to see if the outcome would change. It did not. They then did a format of Windows, but once she got it back and downloaded Firefox, Adobe, and a few other programs then it would start happening again.

She has had this computer for nearly a year she says, and it hasnt ever acted like this, so she thinks it is beyond the mouse.

I asked if the computer shop or if she installed the Logitech mouse drivers and they have not been installed. She is in the process of downloading and installing them now but figured I would put this out there to see if anyone would have any idea on what would cause this. Any suggestions?

The drivers are a good move. Most Logitech mice come with a disk of drivers.

If that doesn't work - replace the mouse. They do wear out.

Then she should still have the Logitech disk that came with the mouse. Another ploy would be to uninstall the mouse, and then reinstall it after a reboot. Sounds like it is the drivers.

I have found that a simple BIOS reset can help this sort of thing. Generally if the PS/2 and/or USB ports start acting up its due to a slight curruption in the BIOS. All you need to do is have her unplug the PC from the wall and remove the batttery on ther motherboard for a minute then hook everything back up. Just be sure to reset the Date and time before moving on otherwise windows will act up a bit.

If all that needs to be done after a CMOS wipe is set the time and date, then the system setup wasn't configured very well...

Chances are we are talking about an OEM system here. In which case the motherboard was set up and using auto detect on everything to start with and no other optimizations where done to the system. But then we are makeing allot of assumtions here.
