Mouse jumpy and files copy SLOW on Abit Kt7

If DMA is checked, my mouse jumps around the screen like crazy when I copy files or install programs (even small ones like acrobat). It makes my machine almost useless... I can't even right click on my desktop while copying files. it also craps out and acts REALLY slow when copying large directories. It shouldn't take 47+ minutes to copy 150mb from one partition to the other! My mouse also gets jumpy when I run anything or windows is loading.

I have a 6gb ATA33 IBM installed as primary master by itself on controller 0, my Toshiba 12x DVD is by itself as master on controller 1. Both drives are detected properly with all settings on auto, both are seen as ATA33 and I have dma checked for both. My mouse is installed as a generic PS/2 mouse.

I've reinstalled MANY many many MANY times now... I'm using the UL bios, I've restored my system to defaults (600x100 standard vcore), latest via 4in1 drivers (.24). Win98SE directX 7a.

The problem seems to go away if I unckeck DMA mode on both my drives... but I need DMA mode checked for best performance!!!! Any advice on what to do? There are no IRQ conflicts.

Did you install all the Via 4n1 drivers for the motherboard?? This happened to me when my 4x1 drivers didn't completely install

Yes, I've tried it with the via 4in1 .24 drivers.. and with simply the drivers that some with Win98SE.

I swapped the drive cable and it seems to have solved the problem.... but not conclusively. I don't have another 80conductor cable, so now it's being forced into ata33 mode... DMA now works fine. Weird as it is only an ATA33 drive to begin and at no time was being detected as ATA66.

I put in my Maxtor 30gb ata66 drive with the 80pin, same problem with the DMA... when it's enabled, the system is wacky. When it's not enabled, everything works fine. Put in a normal ata33 cable, Maxtor is forced to be an ATA33 drive, and I can now enable DMA and have it perform fine. WEIRD. I hope it's not a problem with my MB, but a defective cable. I'll get a new one and find out

Also, you should remove/move any PCI cards you have in the 5th pci slot, it shares an IRQ with the Highpoint ide controller.
Just a thought

About getting a bad Abit board-- you got that right! I got a KT7-raid that i've had nothing but problems with. I got it 2 months ago and it was running my duron650@900 great for 1 month, then it died one night when it was just sitting there playing an mp3s. I couldn't get a video signal, not even a POST beep. I sent it back to the retailer and they said they just reset the BIOS and it worked fine.. So they send it back to me and it ran great for 1 day, and the SAME THING happened. So i just bought another kt7raid from a local vendor and if this new one works i'm gonna try and get my money back from this online vendor. wish me luck.. heh
I had 0 problems w/ my BX6-2.0 for the last few years tho

Damn, I've had that happen too... it won't even post for some mysterious reason once in awhile... I have to use the jumper to clear the bios just to get back into it. I thought it was my faulty pencil trick for overclocking, so I errased the pencil and left it back at default 600mhz... still did it. It's only done it 3 times.... but it has me worried I've had this system for a little over 2 weeks now, and I'm still using my Celeron as my primary just because I can't trust my Duron yet

I need to keep an eye on this Abit board. Wish I had waited two more weeks and gotten an MSI kt7 Pro2. I love the softmenu on the Abit, but I've had so many problems so far. I have 4 systems under my desk now... this AMD/Abit build has been the most troublesome by far.

Problems:
Buggy/troublesome VIA drivers
Pain in the a** Radeon AIW card (still doesn't work right in TV mode)
Bad power supply (RMAed)
Bad ATA66 cable (or may proove to be faulty motherboard)
Flaky board/BIOS that sometimes won't POST even at default settings

Pros:
Radeon's 3D is GORGEOUS, works fine in every game I've tried it with
Fast system, good Sandra results
Cheap

With my previous Celeron build I had several bad hardware pieces... but NO software/weird problems at all. I think I am going to stick with ASUS as I have in the past.
