I previously used the sphex but once it was repositioned, it lost traction and started moving around on me. The surface itself worked well (tracking) and I really liked how thin it is.

Since then I've moved on to the 4HD and love it. It is a nice big size, stays in place and the mice tracks well.

I've used the G400, microsoft sidewinder, and currently the g9x on it. Since the g9x and rat are both laser, I would think it would work as well on the 4HD.

I buy notepaper binders from Wal-Mart. The kind with the softish-plastic (like these.... ) exterior.

Then I just cut the panel at the fused hinge area and stick it via some underside tape to my desk. To me, it provides a perflect blend of slickness / smoothness and feel (and my Steelseries Ikari performs flawlessly on it).

Plus, they're less than $4. Try it before you roll your eyes.....you might be very surprised.

Yup, that's where I ended up!

I actually have a double-sided surface now, and found that only one was really to my liking. Read the reviews first - I bet most people say they like one side much more than the other, and then it comes down to whether that surface is better than other, cheaper pads.

I went ahead and ordered it, can't learn without trying. Amazon as usual doesn't give a **** and will let me return it no questions asked.

Should be interesting to see the difference!

I prefer the rubber ones because the cloth surface has just the right amount of friction. Hard mousepads are too slippery and the surface is also cold to the touch.

lol please be a joke

I've sampled a few different mousing surfaces. Each have their benefits (cheap ones = cheap ... that's about it for their benefits), but if you are a competitive gamer, I cannot recommend a cheap pad.

But playing style has a lot of impact.
FPS gamer? High DPI or Low?

Different friction levels may be better than others, and the choice of mouse may have an impact too (some surfaces don't play well with all laser mice, and some surfaces give most optical sensors a hell of a time).

Really think about how you play, and ignore suggestions for specific mats until then so your opinion is not swayed.

Do you use high-twitch, small and precise movement, or do you use large sweeping movements with lower DPI? If the latter, do you want precision as well? Do you desire a surface that plays well with on-the-fly DPI changes?
Do you have a heavy or light mouse?

Are you really even that competitive? As in, are you frequently toward the top of the scoreboards?

If you are far from the top, a mouse surface decision should be based on usage preferences (comfort, style, function). If you are near the top, it could be enough of a benefit to put you nearer to or even on top of the board. It could provide a way to higher scores regardless, but if you aren't anywhere near the top consistently, either your abilities or other hardware/interface methods are hurting your game more than the mouse surface... most times. It could be the worst pairing of mouse and mouse surface, or at least a bad pairing... but you'd likely notice that in regular usage (or you're not at all sensitive to display-related issues, otherwise you should notice cursor jumping and jarring and erratic tracking).

I'd recommend getting whatever you like and is comfortable if you don't already feel like mouse movement (and that alone) is holding you back. If you do feel so, then more information is necessary.

I recommend the Steelseries SX, if you can find one, they stopped making them. It is my favorite mouse pad ever, fiber-polished aluminum, my mouse seriously feels like it's on air.

http://steelseries.com/products/surfaces/steelseries-sx

Actually my biggest complaint is that I can feel every little piece of debris that lands on the pad, so I end up constantly using the provided polishing cloth to keep it smooth and free of debris(like little specs of w/e, i FEEL THEM)

Got one of these RatPadz GS.

Hard plastic. Hasn't worn much at all in 4-5 years? I clean it once a month to get rid of any buildup from my hands/drinks etc.

Has good glide except in the first mm or so. That's not good for very precise work.

I'd upgrade but I have more priorities such as an RMA to pay for and looking at some new fans.

Or alternatively, get a mouse you don't need to move at all. Logitech M570 is probably the best right now.

hell no. trackballs belong in the 6th ring of hell

alright I'll go through this, I have no problem collecting a few surfaces to play with btw so having bought one 15 buck pad isnt going to end this

yeah mostly FPS. Higher DPI, G9x

sure sure.

generally small precise movement.

I have a few weights in the G9x so it has some feel to it. I dont DPI on the fly much, I turn it down a notch for sniping sometimes if I am having issues

Are you really even that competitive? As in, are you frequently toward the top of the scoreboards?
thats pretty subjective, but I would put myself above average

W/L ratio top 8% 1.6875
SPM top 28% 315.021
K/D ratio top 36% 1.1317
MVP top 38% 23
Skill top 42% 145

nothing spectacular, but lots of teamplaying kills some of the stats(like sitting on the LB/venom repairing for no points )

I am mostly looking into it due to having some issues lately with precise mouse movements.

my desktop is melamie shelving so its cheap veneer with a fake woodgrain print on it

So, last words for a RAT7? I got another 1hr to get next day air on amazon.

Sphex seems good, specially for the price.

I'm using a RAT 7 on some basic Kensington or similar office mousepad. Seems to be working better than the bare desk surface prior.

The mouse is amazingly customizable and kind of daunting, to me, when it comes to setting up profiles. I'm still trying to decide how I want to use all of the buttons in battlefield 3.

I've had a razer destructor for years and it still looks brand new. The thing washes with soap and water, never budges an inch, and makes even a cheap mouse act like an expensive gaming mouse. I always have to laugh at people who spend big bucks on expensive mice only to use a cheap mousepad or the desktop. You might as well put cheap tires on a race car.

Cloth mousepads are for comfort and wear out.
