Mouse problem

Hi,

I have a Logitech MX500 mouse. My system is an AMD Athlon XP 2600+ with Windows XP pro. The mouse was working great. I never had any problems. Just recently, the mouse started acting strange. When you are playing games, or even just browsing the web, or at anytime, the mouse will stop working for a little bit. It does it quite often, and is really irritating, especially when gaming. But anyways, everytime the mouse stops working, I always hear that "found new hardware" sound. I think you might know what sound it is. Like, when you connect and disconnect your printer, that sound.

Any idea what is going on? Is the problem with the mouse? Or with the computer or with the OS?

Sorry, I'm a PC noob.

Sometimes USB controllers get weird, or the port itself. Try putting the mouse on another USB port, if that doesn't fix it, try and use it on another computer if you can, like a friend's compiter. You want to narrow down the problem. It's either the mouse or the USB controller/port.

I do actually have a friends computer with me right now. I had to reinstall Windows XP on it yesterday, and I used the MX500 with it. The mouse didn't work the first time I plugged it in, so I had to unplug and re plug it in several times before I got it to work.

Sounds like the mouse is starting to get old. If its having the same problems on both computers, that eliminates the USB controller most likely.

Next you should try putting a USB -> PS/2 adapter on it to make sure it isn't a USB problem. That is, if you have one. Most likely, the solution is to get a new mouse.

Yeah, I have a USB to PS/2 adapter. It came with my Logitech Click! mouse that I own. But I don't use the adapter, so I am going to give it a shot. Hopefully it solves the problem.

And I hope the mouse isn't dying. If so, this is going to be the first Logitech product that craps out on me.

So far, looks like the PS/2 adapter has solved the issue. My sister is playing Halo and says there are no problems whatsoever.

Thanks for your help!!

I could make a few guesses as to why this is, but it doesn't really matter. You won't lose anything solid from using the adapter. If it works it works right?
