i am currently running windows xp on my laptop. i am also using one of those laptop mice. every once in a while the mouse would stop working for a couple of seconds and then it will be fine. recently, the problem is occuring more frequently until yesterday it stopped working more than it actually works. i thought it was the mouse so i borrowed a mouse from my friend (wired) and it worked fine for a bit, and then the same thing happened to my friend's mouse. he does not have a problem when he used the mouse on his laptop.

do you guys have a possible solution for this? i am not sure if you guys need to know more info, but any help would be nice.

thanks

At first I was thinking battery. But if it happens with two rodents, it's probably not that.

If it's wireless, it could be interference. Try swaping the mouse to the other side of the laptop and see if it changes.

Otherwise, it could be caused by another process hogging the cpu time. It could be your hard drive going to sleep, and then the lag involved when it spins back up. It could be some other device on your USB port hogging the bandwidth.

Does your keyboard seem to lag at the same time?

My work laptop does that. Everything will halt for a few sec, then it catches up with my keyboard buffer and everything works fine again. I notice just before everything catches up, a flury of HDD activity.

If it is a Logitech mouse using the SetPoint software, use the SetPoint version 3.3 or lower.

The new version 4.0 caused huge problems on my 2 computers.

both of the mice are wired and do not have a battery. everything else seems to be running fine and not lagging. it just seems as if the mouse just stops working for a couple of secs and then it starts up again. the other usb ports on my laptop aren't being used. and it's not a logitech. my friend's mouse was a razer diamondback. the one i had was some cheap old laptop mouse.

Tried a different USB port? Ideally from a different group of them (ie. front of the box vs. back panel).
