I am going to buy a new mouse because my MS IntelliMouse Explorer 3.0 is old. I am a gamer and will get a nice surface for the mouse. I dont care if it is wireless or not, but must be optical and have atleast 5 buttons. Ive heard nice things about the Razors, but do they have 5 buttons? I dont really care for the new 4.0 IntelliMouse Explorer, but I havent had alot of hands on time. SO I was considering the : MX 500, MX 700, a Razor Boomslang, any other Logitech or MS or Razor you suggest. Id like a high DPI, so please take that into account. Thank you for your help.

Either MX500 (wired) or MX700 if you want wireless. My advice, though, is go into the store that has an opened model of the MX700 and make sure you are comfortable with the weight of the MX700. I just never could get used to the weight of the 700 and went back to the 500.

If you get the MX700, you should consider getting the Elite duo if your keyboard isn't so great. I was just going to get a new mouse, but when I saw how little the price increased when getting an MX duo instead of just the mouse, I got the set (I already owned a corded version of the Elite keyboard in the Duo).

That MX510 is interesting, I was looking at the Intellimouse Explorer 4.0 as I'm hoping they add support to program the side to side wheel in games, does anyone know if you can map keys to the side buttons on the logitech mice yet? I had a MX700 a while back but the side buttons wouldn't work in many of my games so I sold it.

Not sure about the side buttons, but I have heard people complain with that new Microsoft scroll wheel. It has no notches, so if you use that to cycle your bada$$ weapons in UT2004 (or whatever), they said there is very little accuracy to which weapon you end up with. I would doubt that there would be much support for the side to side motion on it though, probably only from Microsoft for their games (AoE, etc)

thank you guys (or dames). I was worried that no one used Razor Mice, annd the fact that there are no thumb buttons makes me axe the idea. I still do not know if I will go with the MX700 or 500 if I cannot map all the buttons. If anyone else wants to voice a suggestion, post your heart out. Also, I think will use the c4 mouse surface if that helps your thoughts. Thank you again. -Timothy

I recently got the MX duo (elite keyboard and mx700 wireless) and I love it. You can make the buttons do pretty much whatever you want them to and the mouse feels great. Haven't had any problems w/ it and definately recommend it.

The Razer Boomslang has a total of 5 buttons if you include the wheel button. I'm loving mine, and refuse to go back to low DPI optical mouses...including the Logitech MX mouses. Never had to clean its ball either for about 2 years literally and it's still clean.

I'm going to copy and paste my replies from a previous post of this nature...

I've recently gotten around to trying both a MX500 and 700, so I guess I'll throw in my two cents worth. I didn't find the 700 to have any of the wireless lag some are speaking of in comparision to the 500. Sadly, neither are as precise or fast as a Boomslang (either the 1000 or 2000). I found them both to feel a bit cramped also but not so much I'd call it a big issue. The best thing I can say about them is they are the first opticals I would actually consider using for serious gaming. They are most definitely not on the level the Razer mouse is, but then again it has problems of it's own (dunno about the newest versions) that some people aren't willing to put up with.

To which some replied...

What is the razor's problem? The mouse ball?

And my response...

Basic build quality issues on some of them...Right mouse button double clicking sometimes when you only single click. Some have rollers that aren't 100% spot on causing the mouse ball to get in a bind on slow movements, this can be fixed for the most part by cutting a very very tiny bit off the length of the cross-roller spring. They are also very sensitive to dirt accumulation on the rollers, need frequent cleaning. Best way to put it is it's similar to an exotic car I suppose. They are exceptional when working correctly, but some people may not want em as daily drivers.

To this I will add that I have heard from other users the newer Razers (renamed Boomer Speed and Control models) build quality is quite good, though I cannot personally verify this as I haven't purchased any of them. I do however have the new Razer Viper optical model on preorder. I still stand by the above comments, IMO the Boomslangs are still the finest mice you can buy for their intended purpose provided you get a good one. You'll have to decide if you want to take a chance on one.

Also, as stated above the Boomslangs are 5 button designs. L/R mouse, wheel button, and two side buttons (one just forward of the tip of the thumb and one directly where your ring finger rests). If you do decide to try one, I've found the Everglide surface to work best with them for what it's worth.

thank you for your posts. I will check out the Razors again. I dont know about having buttons on the left AND right of the mouse. I have a mate with the Microsoft opt with one on each side and gaming wasnt as happy go lucky because I kept hitting the right side button. ANywho, I have heard serious niceys about the duo (just get the keyboard while im at it) or a Razor. Thank you all so much.

Just a caution about MX500 and 700, they're shaped differently. And from other reviews I heard they have a very different feel than the traditional mouse. The MX310 is more regularly shaped, but I don't know if it meets your 5 button minimum requirement. It definitely has a couple shortcut buttons.
