I recently had to fix the registry on my PC when it suddenly would not start up. Specifically I had to get rid of the corrupt "system" file and replace it with an old backup.
After some work, mostly starting up services manually, the PC is now basically as it was. One problem remains; the mouse pointer will randomly freeze up sometimes. I found a lot of stuff about this on the web, but not exactly about my problem.
The pointer freezes, but the mouse is still usable. You just can't see the pointer anymore because it's stuck in that same spot, but you can still click and highlight and select stuff (very clumsily). Sometimes when I move the mouse, the frozen pointer will change into the "scroll" symbol and back again. Sometimes when it's working the pointer will move slowly with a flicker right before it freezes up, as if the PC is under a heavy load, even when it's idle.
I have a logitech USB optical mouse. A few times, changing its USB port solved it, but that stopped working. I put in an old rollerball mouse with the standard mouse port connection, and the exact same stuff happens to this one. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the mouse, but it didn't help.
Any suggestions appreciated...it's getting darn annoying having to restart the PC randomly every 20 minutes.
