Mouth Watering Socket 939 Opteron Goodness

alright i'm a n00b at oc-ing on the Athlon64 o)

so i'm jumping straight from AthlonXP to hopefully a Opteron 939. i'll probably get a dfi nf4 motherboard (not sure which yet...when's the expert coming out for god's sake?).

i have 1gb (2x512) of pc3700/ddr466 ram...its 2-3-2-5 timings.

which opty would you guys recommend (146 with 10x or 148 with 11x), and what kind of memory divider to get the ram running at full speed as well as getting the most cpu speed? (i have no idea about the memory dividers never had a system/bios that could do that before)

EDIT: do i have this right?

if i want an Opteron 148 @ 2900MHz, that'd be 263MHz FSB, and i'd run the ram on a 9/10 divider to 236MHz (close enough to its native 233MHz)? how does HTT figure into this...

and would a XP-90 or XP-90C with Vantec Tornado 92mm be enough cooling for 2.8+GHz? this thing can get really loud and blow a lot of air at max speed...

I'd recommend saving your money and just buying the 146 Opteron. If you wanted your RAM to run at 236mhz, that would be correct. With Athlon 64 platforms, you also need to make sure that your Hypertransport never goes beyond what it is rated for. In the case of socket 939 setups, we have a Hypertransport of 1000mhz. This is gotten by our "FSB" aka HTT speed multiplied by our LDT/HT multiplier. Normally it's 200mhzx5. At 263mhz, you're going to want to drop down to a 3x LDT multiplier.

An XP-90 with that fan, especially an XP-90C, will do great for cooling this thing to its max on air.

Oh, btw, Monarch dropped their prices on their 148 Opty from $310 to around $230.

Yea I reckon the 146 is the one to get ,aside from default clock speed I don't see that you gain anything from the 148s.........aside from a bigger debt

Btw I've found another place that sells them for us in the UK

CPU city does the 146s for £111 & 144 for £100

We got a few 146's in today (all sold already, filling pre-orders) but they were CABYE 0540's. We also got all of our 144's in, so all existing pre-orders will be filled, and we have 4 still available, or so. They are CAB2E 0540's.

I got a 146 CABYE 0540 from Monarch last week. Amazing chip. Does 2.8GHz at stock voltage. I'd like to try higher but crap memory and a poor selection of dividers are stopping me.

Yes, to both questions. They likely won't ship until tomorrow/Wednesday though, as we've got a TON of orders to go through, and there are only 4 of us to do it, while doing everything else So we're getting through as quick as we can.

You may get the board/video card cheaper elsewhere... honestly our prices aren't usually all that great (our volume is still low, so we don't get great wholesale prices). I certainly won't turn down the business, just don't be shocked if it's a bit more expensive

I just ordered my 148 from Monarch computers. I am looking forward to see what it will do. Hopefully it will do as well as my Winchester which runs @ 2500Mhz on stock voltage.
