So for 4:3 material it only takes up the middle 4:3 portion of the screen, right? (leaving black bars on the left and right?)
The other option for 4:3 without stretching is to "letterbox" it which zooms the middle 16:9 portion of the 4:3 material to fill the full screen and cuts off the top and bottom of the 4:3 image.
For 16:9 material, are you saying it's just taking up the middle of the screen and has a 16:9 image in the middle of the 4:3 area?
Muadib's suggestion of setting up your DVD player for 16:9 sound like the right suggestion to me.
You're not just talking about having black bars on the top and bottom of the 16:9 area, are you? The reason JP takes up the full area is that it's a 1:1.78 DVD and fills up the whole screen without bars.
Most DVDs will still have black bars on the top and bottom for me, but they should fill up the whole horizontal area of the screen. If yours has bars on all sides, something is wrong.
