Movie: The Lives of Others

So I had this movie on blu-ray for a while but didn't get around watching it until yesterday. The movie is in German so I had to follow the subtitle, but the movie is really good. The setting is 1984 in East Germany and the movie does a good job of conveying the oppression of Communist Germany.

If you enjoy political drama, you should definitely give this movie a chance.

Bump because I just saw this and was thoroughly amazed by it. That last hour or so was insane.. I still can't get over the ending, it was seriously the most touching ending I've seen in years if not ever. One second you think it'll end on a low note, then it all comes together a minute later. But wow, this movie is REALLY good. Truly worthy of it's 8.5 on IMDB, I can see it cracking the top 50 one day if more people watch it.

Yes an excellent movie! I watched it on a whim for my German class and really enjoyed it!

Never really understood why people dislike subtitles so much, but this would feel wrong in any other language.

I'll give it a watch. Subtitles don't bother me and I tend to enjoy deeper movies like this.

I had look this up to be sure and it seems your right, but there isn't much information on it. Someone on IMDB said Nicolas Cage was involved but it's not mentioned in his current film bio (whew). Regardless, it's an ambitious project but if it is an American remake I don't know what they could do to accurately recapture the German setting, but more power to them if they can.

what a completely worthless idea. Such a great movie. What can some BS US studio hope to improve upon by remaking this with an American cultural perspective? completely, fucking, irrelevant.

Came in here to say what a great movie this is, looks like I beat myself to it. An english remake, however, is a terrible idea. It's perfect as it was. Don't fuck with it.

Their profit margin, otherwise why even try? It doesn't make sense though, a dark movie like this wouldn't bring in mega-bucks unless it's infused with big actors and lots of advertising, but even then it's a crapshoot. I guess it's wrong to speculate on their intentions without knowing what the remake would even be about, but what I just saw last night doesn't need one in the least and I'd be happy if they left it alone, although now I'm curious.

it will most likely be along the lines of "Enemy of the State," which was a complete rape of "The Conversation."

It clearly has to do with financials, and the only way Hollywood can interpret this story as being profitable would be to adapt it to some US pop-cultural scenario if they are seriously considering Cage. It will be terrible.
