So I want to be a film maker and am renting a few movies for research.. Any suggestions for MUST see movies? Not necessarily vastly entertaining movies but important movies (like Citizen Kane bored me a bit but I understand why it's an important movie).. So here's my list - please make more suggestions:

-Citizen Kane
-Vertigo
-Psycho
-Pulp Fiction
-Godfather 1 and 2
-Raging Bull
-Taxi Driver
-Princess Mononoke/Spirited Away
-The starwars movies (duh)
-Wings of Desire
-The Killer and other early John Woo films
-Notorious
-Gone with the Wind
-Casablanca
-One Flew Over the Cuckoos nest
-2001
-Clockwork Orange

I know that I'm missing a LOT of foreign movies - let me know you multicultural bastards! I'm sure that I'm missing a bunch of other great films too- let me know! I'm taking 4 film classes and need to bury myself in movies this year!

Speak for yourself.

Watch Apocolypse Now as well as the documentary about the making of it called Hearts of Darkness.

i've read heart of darkness....about the dude goign to africa to retrieve that other dude...

apocolypse now tried to touch on the "educated" population....and make them think about the movie and what not...yes i understood everything in the movie ...yes esp. the ever so famous "oh the horror.." scene..and of course the jump the boat reference....that once you do jump the boat, you can never go back..blahbalbhablh hehehe

i wasn't proud of myself when i realized them....it was just a movie that got its idea from a book.....and mirrored the book by setting it in vietnam.....and our job is to think philosophically about it..but really, why should i think about it....oh yes, humans can be so cruel..realization of our loss of innocent is so cruel and sets off a huge epiphany on ourselves that we just have to do movies about it and have more people who are smart think about it and talk about how the movie reflects a blahblabh problem in "society"...

man...it's just a movie...stuff happens..ur only human..no need to tie it together w/ philosophical bs...

well taht's what i think at least....

i like my information blunt...

The movie was based off of the book, Hearts of Darkness, but the documentary with the same name is the making of Apocolypse Now.

If you want to watch movies with ice cream and puppy dogs in it, then that's fine, but don't speak for the rest of us and say that only movies that don't reflect real life should be made.

i think the movie is great. i love Heart of Darkness and(some) T.S. Eliot. i thought it was so well-done. especially if you watch the documentary his wife made. i mean, he goes absolutly crazy making this movie.
the movie itself was a nice combination of Heart of Darkness and Catch-22 for me (especially the surfing part)

oh and Brazil is a great movie (in line with the subject header)
Delicatessen is one of my favorite movies, as well. Songs from the Second Floor (maybe it was seventh, havnt seen it in years) was good.
Bottle Rocket, to me, is a great example of how to make a fantastically subtle comedy.
and The King of Comedy seems like a pretty perfect dark comedy.

It wasn't offensive, just asinine.

And the documentary is Hearts of Darkness and the book is Heart of Darkness so we're both right.

I agree with most the films you suggest. But 2001: A Space Odyssey was by far one of the worst and most pretentious films I've ever seen.
If it were in the theaters I would have walked out. But as for it's importance the message would have been summed up much fast and with less footage wasted on testing the audience's patience.
As for other films just check AFI's top 100 films of all time. That's a pretty damn good list with the exception of 2001 of course.
AFI top 100
As for personal recommendations for well made films (made be on list)
-The Usual Suspects
-L.A. Confidential
-The Shawshank Redemption
-Gosford Park
