Not looking for agreement. I know I have little of that here about those movies. My point is only that I thought those were bad movies for a variety of reasons. Obviously I am in massive disagreement with the status quo. Sue me. I do have my reasons, and I have watched a shit ton of films in my life from nearly ever country, and every year cinema has been around, and every genre, so I have a pretty good basis of comparison. And it's not like I hate all those films, or can't appreciate aspects of them. Some of them even have top notch aspects, and sometimes that's what bugs me the most, but none of those films came remotely close to the hype over them, or did anything like live up to expectations based on popularity and reviews, not for me. I am also a very harsh critic, and demand near perfection, so you don't see middle range reviews from me. It's either loved it of hated it in the vast majority of cases. Luckily for people like me (and I am not alone) so many movies get made that there will always be plenty enough good stuff for me not to waste too much time on the stuff I don't like.

As far as Irr and EtV go. I saw EtV first and I thought EXACTLY the same thing, probably worse. Sophomoric, moronic, trite, pretentious, film school grade drivel. About the only thing I liked was the CGI DMT trip, which was quite accurate, and in my opinion one of the very few good uses of current CGI. So I watched it all the way through to see if there was anything else to it. I found it, but only after the film slithered through my noggin for some time and I watched it again, then again, then again. There is an intricate nearly holographic quality to that film I still can't put my finger on, but there is much more to that onion than the skin.

Did you really watch Irreversible at all? I found nothing about that film pretentious in the slightest bit. On the contrary it was probably one of the most visceral, and truly horrifying films I have ever seen. Again, a hidden layer of complexity seeps through. Very terrific!

OK, cool. that was the first 10 minutes or so that I watched, and that's exactly what I was thinking, haha. I would have soldiered on, though, were it not for the lady giving me the evil eye. I still have it sitting on my shelf...

I actually watched a good bit more of Irreversible. What I found pretentious is that you have to watch the entire 1st act or so with a rotating hand-held shaky cam. I simply can't stand an off horizon for very long, and when it's done to excess and beyond necessity I just get sick. I think he could have achieved that same visceral tension with really tight shots and a god damn steady cam.

I shut it off after ~30 minutes? not sure. I think I'd rather try and get through Enter the Void, though.

and what's with the titles? what an ass. I think this Noe fella is just trolling his audience.

Ahh.. come on, you know there are a lot of people who think Michael Bay is the greatest director ever.

I wholeheartedly agree, that there are a lot more turds than good movies, but that is what movie are.. in general everywhere in the world are. A lot of low brow crap, with occasional marvels. Yes, most Japanese anime is juvenile, but that does not mean all animes are to be discarded. It is not just about animes.. but animation in general.. even the french do an amazing job at that.

We both agree that MB is among the worst directors ever, but you think Transformers is just about fighting robots.. where as I was disappointed in the way MB handled the whole series(I was actually pretty confident that he will mess it up, but never.. in my wildest dreams.. thought that Transformers can be made in such a pathetic manner.

well, if you actually go back and watch those beloved cartoons that we all grew up on--believe me, I have all the fucking toys.--they are absolute horseshit.

no redeeming quality whatsoever. I remember several years ago when I was working at U Chicago, the film center, which does weekly series throughout their season, had a robot series. For one of those, some of us in the lab went to see the Transformers movie (yes, the classic final appearance of Orson Welles in any cinematic form).

Holy fuck. I can't believe I used to like that shit. Then again, I learned not to blame 7 year-olds for their taste.

The Shawshank Redemption

not that it was a bad movie, but I will never understand the absolute love that people have for that movie. I don't see anything in it that ranks it higher than every other generic feel-good movie out there.

yeah. I love that movie, but it's not the greatest thing in the world. not by far. It's a great buddy pic, though. people dig that shit.

I still can't fathom how people have any tolerance for Matrix 2....let alone that is actually better than the 3rd one?

wtf.

that was cinematic abortion at its finest hour.

It was passable because it was brainless, and much like the middle children of many trilogies, it didn't have the weight of tying up all the loose ends on its shoulders. It had some good action in it as long as you're willing to forgo things like significant plot development or good writing.

I adjust my expectations accordingly, which lets me enjoy films much more so than if I examined and punished everything I watched to the max. I don't think I would enjoy life living that way, let alone most films.

The third film was a let down in every way, not only was the action worse (DBZ sky fighting?), but the effects were notably rushed/worse than even the first film, which makes no sense considering the increase in CG tech and budget over the years. So it couldn't rest on being just an action film, which meant that it had to tie up the loose ends and have a compelling story. Sadly, it failed utterly, and had so many meaningless stupid moments that it boggles the mind. The worst was probably the sheer stupidity of the glorified car wreck which sent Trinity flying onto a piece of metal piping. It just brought up the age-old question from Star Trek : when, exactly, did they forget how to make f'ing seatbelts? Seriously.

It's not just me either, RT, Metacritic, IMDB, virtually everyone agrees :

Matrix 1 (unique) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Matrix 2 (meh) >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Matrix 3 (garbage).

What remains indisputable is that the Matrix and Animatrix should have remained untouched. Perhaps make some graphic novels, but maxing Reloaded and Revolutions did a great dis-service to the original, and mars its legacy. This is also true of the SW prequels.

At least Matrix 2 had some decent action scenes. The freeway car chase is fairly epic. Matrix 3 just had CGI jellyfish fighting CGI mechs for 2.5 hours.

do people call that action?

...and that was the worst car chase I have ever seen.

not a single person has mentioned that in this thread.

not one. no sir. not one person...

That's why I'm mentioning "The Hurt Locker". It was not award worthy in any way. I was thinking about a couple other of these annually super hyped movies that are put up for awards and before I could try to suggest they were all crap, I saw "Crash", and "Slumdog Millionaire."

Slumdog millionaire had so much hype, and it was a great movie.

Crash had probably the same hype and it was a good movie.

FightClub - Although I can't say it was hype, because I saw it the day it came out in the theaters and didn't have any expectations going in. I actually thought the movie was pretty good, until the end. Fucking retarded! Seriously, the twist is, a guy inspired people to create a "fight club" by beating himself up. Seriously? SERIOUSLY?!

I'm sorry that you did not enjoy one of the best movies ever made. I didn't think it was all that great the first time I watched it either.

But then I watched it again, and a few other.

Matrix.
XXX.
Spiderman/Batman (All superhero movies are generally horrible)
Terminator 3 and 4. 2 is decent until the super long ending but is overhyped IMHO. 1 was spooky and good and highly underrated.
Transformers.
Fast and the Furious series. Even though I can't say it was overhyped, atleast the later ones.
Underworld, Twilight. (and any other werewolf/vampire movie)
Harry Potters.
Anything Adam Sandler is part of... Seriously guys, find some content. Grandmas Boy even though in my league, was completely worthless.

Wait, you just hated on T2?? I don't think I've ever heard anyone that likes action at all hate on T2...wow. Sure the first one is awesome, but the 2nd one just took it all over the top.

This thread just goes to show though, everyones taste in movies is different, thus why even the movies everyone thinks is crap are still doing well ;p

For me the most hyped movie that sucked was Let the Right one In (Let me In). BORING AS HELL. Did not find it spooky, scary at all.

A movie that wasn't hyped as far as I know and is the worst movie in history is "Beneath". OMG what utter trash, I was in a tent in Afghanistan and only paid $1 for it and I immediately threw it away. Horrible.

I was being facetious about Hurt Locker. It's been mentioned more than any other film in this thread.

yeah, I really wanted to see Slumdog Millionaire when it came out, then it went nuts with acclaim and popularity, and it took me forever to see it. By then , the hype was too much to bear.

Had I seen it in early release, I probably would have liked it enough, but quickly forgotten it. as it stands, I find it to be ridiculously over-hyped.

Fight Club is good....one of the best ever? eh....

I actually liked Crash, too. No idea why people get all apeshit and offended over it. "OMG this movie is trying to force something down my throat! OMG I R so Offended!"

at the very least, it was written/directed by Paul Haggis, who should be a cultural hero for the ave. ATOTer. He might very well be the dude that brings down Scientology, if anyone is going to do it. (not that he seems to want to actively pursue this; but his damning revelations have sent the cult down an irreversible trajectory)

that's Monica Bellucci, right?

I've seen her tits plenty of times.

And believe, me, the only thing keeping me going until I shut that hole off was the prospect of her being in it.

Though, rape tits are not my idea of kinky. What do you think I am, a Japanese businessman? :sneaky:

How was the action or CGI worse? The truck collision was one of the worst CGI things I have ever seen. It was terrible. Actually same thing for the superman slow mo at the end of 2 as well (did you forget they started that shit in the 2nd one? well really the very end of the first, but they didn't make it integral to the story until the 2nd and used it in a very contrive BS manner and looked like shit to boot). Ditto for the million Agent Smith fight. I hate DBZ, but even that stuff in the 3rd wasn't nearly as bad as the 2nd. Well the slo-mo punch face distortion was 2nd movie terrible action and CGI.

They're both terrible, but the 2nd is worse (the third at least had the mech guns). Most of the derision for the sequels gets directed at the 3rd one which is why it gets so many bad reviews. That and by then people had been informed of the blatant symbolism which turned people off, but people are stupid since that was started all the way back in the first one. The second one setup the 3rd to be the most hated (the architect bullshit and then Neo flying and resurrecting Trinity), but most people don't even remember the second one properly.

everything about Matrix 2, especially the action, was completely tedious and horrible.

This. It was just terrible in every respect. The action was actually the worst part of the 2nd one.

I forgot about the stupid albino/ghost twins.
