I'd go so far as to say V for Vendetta is the worst movie I've seen in 10 years. Genuinely shocking how bad those two were. I'm guessing Lady in the Water was shocking for people who went without reading reviews. I fortunately was prepared for the suckiness and so it wasn't too shocking.

As far as classics go, I'd probably pick The Big Sleep. Such a highly regarded movie in a genre and time I love, but it just did not work at all for me. Very surprised at how much I disliked it considering my affection for other noir from the time.

I actually liked V for Vendetta quite a bit, but agree that Lord of War was bad, and overrated (though I certainly didn't find it shockingly bad). I didn't mind The Big Sleep, and thought Howard Hawks and Faulkner (who wrote the screenplay) did a good job of sort of parsing Chandler's insanely confusing novel. Actually IIRC there is at least one death that even Chandler said he couldn't explain.

That and Uwe Bol's Bloodrayne top my list of worst movies ever. Least I had the sense to DL Bloodraye, I paid to see UV in the theater.

I think it was the fact that the plot did not make sense at the end of the film that made me hate The Big Sleep so much. That, and the fact that it was kind of like bad anime where plots were not developed and it just used instant plot twists and too much exposition.

Some that I've seen lately:

Nacho Libre -- I really enjoyed Napoleon Dynamite and I can stomach Jack Black occassionally, but this was just dumb and unfunny.

The Family Stone -- came on HBO Saturday. Wow, what a snoozer. I have no idea what this movie was trying for. Is it funny? Is it sad? Is it just supposed to make you uncomfortable? Turned it off an hour in. So boring.

Talladega Nights -- I like Will Ferrell. I like Sascha Baron Cohen. I like stupid movies. This was just unfunny. Fell asleep with 20 or so minutes left. Didn't care, sent the movie back to Netflix.

Watch Melinda and Melinda or Stranger than Fiction. There's a difference between an actor with no depth and an actor being typecast / playing the same type.

The movie 'Hotel' is *by far* the worst movie ever created

I've watched a lot of movies and seen some really bad ones. Most of those in this thread I wouldn't include because I could've told you they sucked without seeing them. When a movie looks bad and turns out that way it's not shocking so IMO, they don't qualify.

I was in Blockbuster and as usual all of the new releases were out so I started looking for an unknown gem. I had never heard of it but I selected 'Hotel' because it had bunch of well known actors including Lucy Liu and Salma Hayek. It was a HUGE mistake. Until you've watched it you don't know what a truly horrible movie is. Anchorman was painful as well but I'd watch it 10x before 1 more viewing of Hotel.

Again, Hotel is the worst movie ever. Period.

Um both Freddy vs. Jason and Alien vs. Predator had winners... the ones who were left standing at the end won, despite the cliffhanger-type ending that was intended to leave both movies open for sequels.

Oh, and BUTCH1 is absolutely correct, Battlefield Earth was by far the worst movie ever made. Any other opinion is wrong, sorry.

Gotta agree, haven't seen anything worse the Battlefield Earth. Hell it was such a shockingly bad movie it made "Wing Commander:The Movie" look good.

Battlefield Earth was even worse for those who liked the book

Chronicles of Riddick. I can't believe I saw it in theater. At least it was free (a promo).

Major boo-urns on you! The movie kicks so much ass, I saw it in the theater and didn't think much of it at first but after a few more watches at home it really grew on me and I got to appreciate it for the story and symbolism as well as the CGI.

Oh come on, how about this little gem:

"There's gonna be one speed - mine. If you can't keep up, don't step up - you'll just die."

And he can't decide whether to keep those damn goggles on or off.

Oh and how about Thandie Newton's "NOOOOOOOOO!!!" at the end? That's not an overdramatized cliche at all .

Obviously you didn't see Pitch Black or you would know why he wears goggles and why he would have to take them off a lot.

I love the story of Riddick, although the cartoon in between pitch black and chronicles was bad - I can't wait to see the next movie thats supposed to be made. The last furian as head of the necromongers, he could go either way at any time so your left pondering so many things.

We need a 'suprisingly good' movie thread. Not just good movies but movies you expected to suck that were actually good.

I'll have to agree with Superman Returns. never finished watching it on DVD, just took it back to the store, and this in a week where I had tons of time and a new 42" HDTV to play with.

What shocked me was all the good reviews it got led me to think it may be better than I would expect, but the story was plain, the lead was completely wooden, and appeared to be trying (unsuccessfully) to channel Reeve, and even Kevin Spacey was unwatchable, only Parker Posey was any fun.

I am very forgiving of Superhero movies. I actually finished Daredevil and Electra, and up to now only the worst Batman movies made my unwatchable list. This latest Superman is not quite as terrible as some of those (Batman and Robin), but it had more promise.

I think the Studio/Director must have deliberately tried to make the film refer back to the simpler times of the 80's Superman, but it ended up just coming out lame.

Ironically, it was Batman Begins that made me have hope that mainstream DC comics could be made into good movies, Superman puts the trend squarely back into the losses column.

Perhaps I should not have been suprised. Superman has always been the white-bread All-American high-school quarterback of superheroes.

It got better towards the end, but definitely was off. Superman is hard to do well.

No offense - I didn't particularly like either of these movies, but it seems crazy to me to say either of them were "SHOCKINGLY bad." The Good Shepherd, in particular, was actually pretty good IMO, just half an hour too long.

Oh that reminded me of mine.

The Village.

The only time I have ever seen an entire theater stand up and boo as they left.

(haven't seen the lady one yet though. )

I actually liked Battlefield Earth, maybe because I watched it after everyone built up how bad it was, it ended up being slightly better than expected.

Now Gili OTOH, got built up as bad, and turned out to be even worse. This might be an obvious choice for worst movie of all time. Its stench even tainted Afflacks next movie (Which was acutally pretty good) Jersey Girl.

Mission To Mars (I remember this one cuz I was snoring in the theater, pretty embarassing)
Miami Vice (Huge waste of time)
Zoolander (I tried to like it 3 times, didn't work. it was just freakin' annoying)
My Boss' Daughter (First movie I've ever walked out of)

IMO, if you walk out, fall asleep, or do anything else that involves not seeing the full movie, you really aren't qualified to include it. If you do that then Dark Blue might seem like an awful movie, where in fact the last third of the movie makes it worth watching.

I just remembered Johnny Mnemonic was awful. I had no real expectations when we walked in but I remember by the half-way point, my eyes were focusing on a point behind the screen and I was in la-la land trying to block out the pain.

Cabin Fever at least had some intentionally funny parts ("Why do you want to shoot the squirrels?", "What's the gun for?", etc.).

However, the movie that set the standard of bad on which my friends and I all base bad movies is A History of Violence. Looked promising... but it was so bad from every angle we couldn't help but laugh that we wasted our two hours watching that film.

Saw (the 1st) at least gets an honorable mention.

The Village

M. Night Shamalan or however you spell his name, his last few movies have been overhyped and pretty damn bad.
