moving a raid array & upgrade recommendations

i have a raid array on a promise controller, and thinking of buying a new motherboard with built in raid
will everything be fine? if i use the onboard controller. i figure all the information is stored on the hd anyway, but just making sure.


also, i feel like blowing some money today.

**NO** this is a very wrong and bad assumption. Unless the new controller is IDENTICAL to the previous one in BIOS revision, type and implementation, it will NOT move correctly. Even then it may still run into problems. if you want your data BACK IT UP!

I work with people moving this every day, there is basic information about the striping written to the disc, but also information on the controller itself. Moving RAID arrays is a very tricky and dangerous process. Even on Dell systems, I reccomend backing up information before doing it. One wrong move can fry all of the data.
