Moving HDD to new computer

I have been thinking building a new computer for my dad
Problem is that he can't handle change at his age so I was wondering which would be a better option ;
Clone his HDD (don't know how so suggestions are welcome
Just use the old HDD with a IDE to SATA conversation kit (would it boot on the first try)
Running XP now and changing to Win7 would be too much
All thoughts and ideas welcome

You could use DriveImage XML to clone the drive and do an in-place repair of Windows XP to fix the dissimilar hardware issues you will run into when booting to the newly cloned HD on the new system.

This will leave Windows intact as well as all programs and files.
