Moving my 42" Plasma crossed country

So I'm moving from the East Coast to back to the Midwest. I'm doing the move myself. Planning on getting a couple of PODS and having them transported for me. My question is what the heck do I do with my Plasma TV? I've seen Uhaul sells a TV box for $85. Is that my best bet? Or would I be better trying to sit it upright in the back of my SUV out of the box (Will not fit in the car in a box). Or should I try building my own crate. $85 buys lots of 2x4's and particle board.

Looking for suggestions.

I've gotten tvs shipped cross country - they must stand as the would when you watch them (not on their side, not face down), and I'd suggest getting the tv box, just in case. 4" of styrofoam all around in a thick cardboard box worked for me.

Yeah I know I had to keep it upright. Just seems crazy to me to spend $100 on a cardbourd box. Guess I should have kept the original, just takes up so much space!

Ha, are you based in NYC? I just threw out the box to my 50" plasma last night, it'll be in front of my apartment building until Monday, at least. I didn't break it down because I'm lazy, and that's what we pay our porter for. If you're in Brooklyn it's yours!

Not too far from NYC. I've been trapped in Princeton, NJ for the past 4 years... Think Nj Transit would mind me hauling that thing back on their train... LOL

You could also go to the local Best Buy or Circuit City .. most of those stores deliver the sets and may have an extra box laying around. Remember, it costs them to pay for cardboard disposal .. So they may have one to give you.

This. I've moved a 42" set a couple of times by putting it in the back seat and using the seatbelt harnesses to make sure it stays upright and surrounding it with a bit of makeshift padding (pillows, blankets, etc). I figure the car seats probably help dampen the vibrations more than some styrofoam in a box would anyways. As long as you make sure it's upright and nothing is going to bang into the glass you should be fine.

I went to my Circuit City and knocked on the door, but no one answered

I may have missed that Circuit City is gone. Try your local Best Buy or PC Richards .. both are still around (at least in NJ)

Contrary to myth Plasmas do not need to be fully upright the entire time. It is the glass that will break your picture will still work fine, just make sure you are careful if it is on its back.

1.) sell the tv buy a new one when you get there.
2.) ship it via ups, in all actuality you don't want to mess with bringing it out especially given how cheap tv's have become.

I've read the same thing about Plasmas not needing to be upright. It seems just to be a generic warning because laying down the risk of breaking the glass is much greater.

Oh and the wife vetoed the new TV idea. That was my first suggestion.
