Fiance and I are moving to Dallas in september and we're looking for cool places for young professionals to live.

I'll be working in downtown and she'll be working in Irving, however we'll both only need to go into the office one day a week since we'll be traveling consultants. But as a result we'll need easy freeway access to the airport.

We're gonna rent for a while since neither of us will be home enough to really maintain a house at first. I'd like to live in an upbeat happening area for the time being, she wants to live in a safe area thats not too expensive. Any Dallas people cares to give any suggestions? Thanks guys.

Update: My work will also be in Irving...still need suggestions though!

its gonna be a shock going from a 2 bedroom house to a 637 sq ft one bedroom apt.

"Upbeat and happening" and "safe but not too expensive" are somewhat contradictory. Somewhere in Addison sounds like it might be a good fit.

I would highly recommend not living in the city of Dallas. Not sure if you know or not, but there are, in all seriousness, 50+ cities in the area. Nearly all of them would be better to live in then Dallas.

If you need to be close to DFW Airport and downtown, I would recommend Irving (Las Colinas is more of a business district in Irving that does have some apartmens/condos for some serious $$$) or perhaps Grapevine, or Coppel. All of those cities basically 'touch' the airport in one sense.
Contrary to the name, the City of Dallas does not actually 'touch' DFW airport, but that really doesn't matter I suppose.

If you are looking for a two bedroom apartment between $800 - $1000 you may be SoL for any sort of nice, cool, hip, urban type of setting.
You could find an apartment near downtown in the Deep Ellum area starting around ~$800 for a SINGLE room and that may be one of your cheaper options.

If money was not much of a factor and I wanted to live in a place that had a lot of stuff going on, I would probably choose Addison myself.
If you want to live close to downtown and the airport and be within driving distance to the 'hip' spots and not spend an arm and leg I would go with Irving.

Irving, depending on exactly where, is right next to the airport and highway 183 runs thru Irving which also runs right into I-35 which takes you right to downtown Dallas or other places of interest in Dallas: McKiney Blvd, Greenville Ave, Inwood, etc.
North Dallas you have Addison, Plano, The Colony, Allen, Frisco, Carrolton, Farmers Branch all of which are very nice cities that have a higher than average household income. However, the drive to downtown would hit a lot of traffic, but if you only have to go go downtown once a week then I suppose you could deal with it.

Plano is nice and big. Not exactly "happening," but you don't want to live in Dallas-proper anyway. I had a nice 2-bedroom, 2-bath, 1-office place in NorthEast Plano for ~$1200/month. Prices vary a bit. You sound like you want someplace in the South Plano or near-Addison area. If you only have to go downdown once a week, then you have *tons* of choices, as traffic will not be your main concern.

you forgot to tell the OP how to get the airport easily from Plano...it's a coin flip between 75 to 635 (traffic and more traffic - how about that high 5 area) and 121 (maybe they should add a few more lights along the way??)...either way is a minium of 45 minutes during the day (more like 90-120 minutes during
rush hour)...

based on what the OP described, he should check out the valley ranch area (go north of 635 and macaruthur)...ton of apartments (both new and old) and is about 10 minutes from the airport...even has a Fry's right there...

edit: forgot about using George Bush Tollway...should take about 30 minutes once they get it done from 35E to 635 (should be around $4 each way)....

I'll suggest a few locations within close proximity of your work sites and the airports (Love Field and D/FW). I would suggest somewhere in north Irving, either near the Las Colinas (business district... sort of a "remote" downtown) or Valley Ranch (near the Cowboys main offices) areas, or Coppell which is more west toward the airport. Alternatively, I'd live in the Uptown section of Dallas proper, which is a newer area just north of downtown. It's the hip and cool place to live right now, but you'll pay a premium for the location though.

Choices probably out of your price range: You could get an apartment in Highland Park or University Park (two affluent cities "surrounded" by Dallas) along Northwest Highway, but again you'll pay a huge premium. If you're independently wealthy, you could live in a high rise in the Turtle Creek area of Dallas proper (again near downtown).

I would stay away from Lewisville, Highland Village, Denton, Plano, Frisco, Allen, McKinney, Richardson, Garland, Mesquite and other areas on the east side of town... just because you'll be fighting a sea of traffic, most of the time. You'll either be sitting on the I-35 parking lot, or paying tolls on the North Dallas and George Bush tollways. In any case, purchase tolltags for your cars. You'll get a discount (about 15 cents per booth) and high speed passive tag for toll booths, and they work for parking at the airport.

If you want more "budget" oriented suggestions, move more west toward Fort Worth. Dallas, Fort Worth and Denton (and the surrounding suburbs) have essentially grown together into one large metropolis much like the LA area... even though people won't admit it. Southlake, Colleyville, Grapevine, Keller, Flower Mound, Euless, and Bedford are all nice suburbs that are west of D/FW airport in Tarrant (read near Fort Worth), rather than Dallas county. The cheapest /best value homes are more north toward Denton, but that has created huge traffic problems on the north-south freeways (I-35 parking lot).

Oh, and there are 4 Fry's locations in the area: Dallas (east side), Arlington, Irving, and Plano.

I mentioned Irving and looks like it has been mentioned a few times, so sounds like a winner! I think the McArthur/635 area near Valley Ranch would be a pretty awesome place.

I live in Arlington, well actually I am staying with my woman in Ft. Worth at the moment. Anyhow, I find Arlington, Ft Worth, Grapevine, HEB to be excellent areas when it comes to price vs quality of life. The only reason why I did not mention those locations is that it would be a pain in the butt drive to downtown Dallas.

update for you guys, I just found out my new office will be in Irving...of N State highway 161

Fiancee's office will be on MacArthur...so we'll be pretty nearby.

Irving and Las Colinas look pretty good...does anyone know any nearby secure complexes where you can get a 2 bedroom for 800-900?

I suggest Fry's. I'm not sure where you would sleep in the closing hours, but, I'm sure you can hide somewhere in there.

Funny... your two work locations are in between the two top areas I first mentioned in Irving, Las Colinas and Valley Ranch.

Try here... searched on 2 bedroom apartments in Irving between $750 and $1000

I've had good luck in the past with Jefferson complexes, but there are a lot of great choices in that area. If you stick to apartments on or near MacArthur, you'll be set for a very short commute to work.

Las Colinas / north Irving area sounds ideal for you, if I was to move from my current house in Fort Worth that's where I'd go too. Fry's is right down the street
