Moving To Detroit Area Soon

I have a job in downtown Detroit starting soon. I found a place in Dearborn about 11 miles away, which seems like a reasonable commute. It's on Ford Rd. just North of the mall. I've also tried looking around hipster favorite Royal Oak, but have been unable to find a satisfactory place for a reasonable price/commute. I also looked around downtown, but didn't find anything even remotely worthwhile for the rents. Is Dearborn pretty decent place to live overall? There seemed to be a decent amount of fast food nearby, as well as a gym. Other than that I don't have time to do too much, 'cept drinking once or twice a week.

No need to be sorry. I make good money and my family and friends are around this region.

I would suggest not living in Dearborn. Have you tried St Clair Shores? The Gross Pointe area? Royal Oak is good too.

St. Clair shores is too far, and Grosse Pointe has few rental properties, other than chopped up old houses which I don't believe in renting.

Did you check all the Grosse Pointe areas, though? Grosse Pointe Woods, Farms, Shores, Park, etc.

How far away do you want to be from work?

Edited because I fail at reading comprehension.

I work near Fairlane mall and that area is decent.

I like Dearborn, it has a lot to offer, but I imagine that crime is higher there than in the northern 'burbs. So, work, gym, a little drinking? If the nightlife isn't of huge concern, than maybe Royal Oak isn't for you, but you should be able to find a nice place to stay in Bloomfield, Birmingham, maybe Sterling Heights?

With all of the nice lofts that have gone up in the last few years downtown, I'm surprised that none of them look appealing. But then again, I don't know what rent is like downtown either.

Maybe tell us more about what you're looking for in a neighborhood?

Agreed, Dearborn is dirty. you'll get jumped by wannabe ganster teenagers.

I prefer the west side myself. Livonia is Ok in certain parts, Plymouth or Canton are better.

If you got more money you can try the Northville/Farmington areas. Novi is nice.

How long does it take to drive from Plymouth to downtown? One of my friends has a house there, right near Plymouth's downtown area - not quite as much to do, but it's a beautiful "town". Might be a nice alternative to Royal Oak, even though that would be my first choice (with Birmingham being second probably).

Those places are all a bit too far for my tastes, though they do have better housing stock than Dearborn. I have to be at work at 7 so I'm trying to limit my commute to something around 12 miles or so. The place I found in Dearborn is gated, so I'm not too worried about crime.

Royal Oak seems nice. I tried looking for a place there earlier today, but a lot of the units seemed to be condos. Royal Oak has the feel of one of those "college towns", which I lived in for a couple of years while as an undergrad. I don't have a great desire to revisit that kind of lifestyle (walking to places, street parking, noisy neighbors, etc.), as it was more hassle than it was worth.

considering plymouth is right by I96, you can get downtown Detroit pretty quickly. 15 minutes no traffic, 30 minutes bad traffic.

Should know that City of Plymouth and Plymouth Township are two different entities, hard to tell them apart, but one is WAY cheaper on the taxes. I bought in the township because the property taxes were the lowest in the 3 counties in/around Detroit. But I'm still within walking distance of downtown Plymouth.

Downtown plymouth has TONS to do in the summer, they are always having concerts, festivals, art fairs, I know kinda lame, but people with kids love it. The bars are good there, plenty of tail if your a single guy. And if Plymouth doesnt deliver youve got plenty of other options nearby.

Takes me about 20-25 minutes from M14/I96/I275 interchange. Assuming I don't hit it at rush hour or accident hour or construction hour or random roadwork truck hour. If I'm working I have to be in at 7am so not a problem, and otherwise I can wait until the coast is clear

Dearborn Heights wouldn't be too bad. Wyandotte is okay. St. Clair Shores isn't any further than Royal Oak, plus you could even avoid the highway and take a less stressful drive down Lakeshore/Jefferson.
