St claire Shores is not too far. In fact, its a MUCH nicer area then Ford Rd in Dearborn and you can find some really nice cute houses for cheap! I would highly suggest living in Macomb County and working in Wayne County.

The only way I'd move to detroit is if i was making six-figures, could work from home, and have all of my groceries delivered straight to my house.

If you want an idea of traffic, starting watching this site for a while: http://www.michigan.gov/drive
Select Detroit in the dropdown menu when you get to the actual map.

Edit: Wow, just went to the site, haven't used in it quite a while, looks like most of the speed sensors are down in Detroit...figures.

Royal Oak is very nice. I was just down that way to buy a popup trailer. Traffic is thick as flys on shit though. Ferndale is nice area from what I see but Dearborn is not the place.

Detroit actually has some nice areas. The area around W.S.U. is nice with lots of stuff to do including the winter. There is a new river front also though I have not been there yet, I hear it is nice. Belle isle is staring to come around after years of neglect though the zoo and aqurium (sic) are gone. Hart plaza is always hopping with something in the summer. When I was younger I used to go to a place called "Lillys" in Hamtramck down the street from the Kowalski meat plant. Hard rock great people no assholes and you can dance on the tables, medical bills are your responsiblity though when you fall Do not know if it is still there though. Plymouth and many other cities have ice festivals in the winter though Plymouths seems the best. You will need a passport or enhanced ID to get into Canada now though.

Lived in Dearborn. It's a very big burb. You picked the worst part.

Dearborn is divided into three parts indicated by its three high schools. Fordson region is closest to detroit and has a very high Arabic pop. Edsel Ford is better and south from Fairlane Mall. Dearborn high is the best area over by Michigan Ave. & Outer Drive, houses can probably be found from $50K - 1M.

I might pick one of the other two areas of Dearborn.

My area of expertise is south and west, let wiz tell you about the Eastside.

Did you try any of the downriver communities. I live in Wyandotte, fairly cheap, nice downtown.

Trenton/Brownstown is decent too, but much quieter(aka older folks without children). I actually work at the hospital in Dearborn.

I know wiz might disagree but I think Royal Oak is overpriced housing wise and sometimes entertainment/food wise.

I used to stay in Rochester, great town, but too far for your purposes.

I suppose my biggest advice is that if you are going to work in downtown Detroit, stay close to either I-94/I-96/M-10(The Lodge Freeway) or I-75(when it reopens) all these freeways are a straight shot into downtown Detroit.

Oh and since you are so close, if you ever wish to have a drink or two, I know a few good places around here. Just PM me if you ever have a question

This.

Going west on I-96 you can find decent areas in Livonia, Plymouth is better.

Going west on I-94, you won't find something decent close to e-way until you're past the airport.

South along I-75, until you hit Southgate (Death is just east of there in Wyandotte)

I already talked about Dearborn which you access off of the Southfield (I-39) or pick up I-94 in Allen Park or Melvindale. You could also look in some parts of Allen Park.

Should know that City of Plymouth and Plymouth Township are two different entities, hard to tell them apart, but one is WAY cheaper on the taxes. I bought in the township because the property taxes were the lowest in the 3 counties in/around Detroit. But I'm still within walking distance of downtown Plymouth.

Downtown plymouth has TONS to do in the summer, they are always having concerts, festivals, art fairs, I know kinda lame, but people with kids love it. The bars are good there, plenty of tail if your a single guy. And if Plymouth doesnt deliver youve got plenty of other options nearby.

No way,
My parents live in canton and you're looking at good 45 minutes to do 14 to 96 to downtownon a work day. I regularly make ann arbor - canton - bloomfield hills trips and you can barely make it to telegraph in 15

The delivery guy would never make it. Pretty harsh of you to expect someone to die for your groceries. Bastard.
