Accepted a job offer in Louisville, will be moving from Danville (about 1.5hrs SE of Louisville) within the next 2 weeks. Plan on renting an apt. or house for about a year while we wait for our house to sell (hopefully) and save up a down payment on another house.

I've heard NE is great but expensive, Central Eastern is middle class, far SE is redneck, close to downtown SE is more white trash, New Albany (north) isn't too bad but it's in Indiana and stay away from West and South portions of town. That about right? Any good apt. complexes to recommend?

Don't know much about Louisville, other than the slugger musuem. I visited Jeffersonville, Indiana (across the river) and liked it. It is probably cheaper than Louisville too.

But I will be near you in two weeks doing the bourbon trail. I will raise my glass to your new job on my way through.

Learn to play the ponies, Churchill Downs fall meet will start soon. We're also one of the top cities for local music and dining.

St. Matthews is a nice area with plenty of apartments. Overall traffic isn't too bad but you can add 15-20 minutes to the trip during rush hour.

what's with all the hate on Louisville? my brother has lived here for 20+ years and loves it, and i know there are quite a few AT folks that live there and have very few bad things to say.

as far as the "reconsider" comment goes, it's a 50%+ raise, already accepted the offer and put in my notice, and I'm moving out of a 20k person town where there isn't much to do to a metro area w/ all kinds of stuff. Not going to reconsider.

I've got Ryder Cup with corporate tent tickets, but my girl would kill me if I took you. Also you'll have to convert to a Cardinals fan, no UK fans allowed.

And for anybody slamming Luvul, we're like the 18th largest city!!!!11

All I remember from Louisville is getting wasted on 4th street and pouring gravy on Colonel Sanders' grave.

My brother works in Danville. I don't have much experience with Louisville myself, I'm Lexington folk. But I know you already live here in KY, so no need to welcome you to the state, just wanted to say good luck on your move (and that bitch of a transit you're going to be making a LOT over the next year).

Football game is this Sunday, better start wearing RED.

If you like going to bars then 4th street live can be a ton of fun. Remember, stay away from the west end. Oh and don't forget the gambling boat right across the river, great gaming, great place. Churchill does happy hour fridays so you can head there after work and play the ponies, take your winnings and go to the gambling boat.

Hey, Joemonkey!
I live in Danville, too. (I am responsible for the Library Expansion Downtown!)
But I worked in Louisville for ~20 years. East End is where you want to live, provided you can afford it,(Very Expensive), next choice would be in the Highlands, still expensive, but closer to downtown. Next nicest area would be Germantown area, nearly Downtown but lots of Factories, processing plants, etc.
And yes, definitely avoid West & South of Downtown, however, further south in the Suburbs, you'll find middle class, quiet places like Fairdale & Okolona, most affordable middle class areas around.
And, FYI, most of Southern IN. is, to say the least, quite "nasty", though inexpensive.

Thanks for the advice jupiter57! If the "57" in your name is any indication of your age at the time of joining, which would make you 64 by now, then i understand why you like Danville Not a lot to do for young folks here.

What are some of the main street names in the Highlands and Germantown areas? You have to remember, I'm a small town country bumpkin that isn't used to big city livin'

Oh, one more question, what the hell kinda mass transit system does Louisville have, if any? no subways that I can recall, but I did hear someone talk of "taking the shuttle" at one point. Do they have park and rides? buses? anything worthwhile?

One thing people that have grown up around any sort of mass transit don't realize is that when you grow up in an area with NONE, even SHITTY mass transit sounds GREAT and even though may be a bit of a time waster can be a huge money saver in the long run.

Intersection of main street, baxter ave, bardstown road. That is the innermost section of the Highlands. Move away from the city to get to the highlands. Intersection of baxter and bardstown and start moving outward. My girl bought her house for 90k in the higlands, it's worth about 250 now.

Take a look at St. Matthews, very desirable if you just need a place for 6 months. My first apartment was in Germantown - a two bedroom huge place for 500/mo above a furniture store. Probably 1400 sqft.

There's a small chance that the inlaws of a former co-worker have a house in St. Matthews that we may be able to rent/buy. Their mom left them something like $3 million, and they moved to florida. Co-worker said the house has been uninhabited for 5+ years but still had regular maintenance done on it, all utilities left on, someone paid to do landscaping, just had him go there once or twice a month to flush toilets and run some water. Be nice if we could score that for renting, or hell if they're dense as far as the housing market goes (as most lazy millionaires would be I guess you could assume) buying for cheap.

was joking really, louisville is actually a pretty nice town. Just stay out of the bad parts. I hear there is a lot of cool stuff to do in louisville.

wow... you talk about the area having a white trash section and then when someone else who's been there similarly calls it a toilet bowl you go off on him and bait his response. then you cry and get him banned.

ya big baby.
