Moving to Sacramento. Any ideas?

Just took a new job in Sacramento, so I'm leaving Maryland for Sacramento on Sunday morning. I should get there by the 7th or 8th.
Anyone have any ideas on where to live? Looking around on the net, I figure that I should try East Sacto or Downtown, since its close to CSUS and the bars. I'd like someplace where I can walk to bars/restaurants so I don't have to worry about driving everyplace. I'll be working in Folsom, so I'm not too worried about the commute - it seems hella short.

Any ideas, or apartment suggestions?

Yeah bring money.. lots of money as it is almost as expensive as the Bay Area is without the all the cool things that make the Bay Area so great.

Sactown to Folsom commute is not short ... racked up like 10k miles on my car in 1/2 year. Just go live in Folsom I say. That's what I plan to do when my lease is up.

Haha.... Good advice... Yeah, I saw that fiber deal. Looks pretty good to me.

Right now, I'm more concerned with having a good time and a good place to stay rather than worry about commute times. I'm not so sure Folsom has the kind of night life I'm looking for.

Any specific suggestions for downtown, or at least warnings of bad areas to not look for a place? I talked to a lady on the phone about the "Fairlake" apartment complex near Arden (?), and she seemed nice enough. On the map, it looks like it might be a less desirable location. It's at Howe & Sierra.

Oh, and money-wise, I'm used to getting raped. A sh1tty 2br apt here in DC runs us $1275 a month (and one bedroom is a converted SMALL dining room)

Umm, you did price stuff before you took the job right? You realize of course that to my untrained eye that DC rent looks pretty low for the bay "area". Although Sac isn't quite as expensive as downtown SanFran I would wager you are going to pay more for less than you had in DC.

Well, coming from no job (college) to a very nice salary, I'm ready to pay plenty. I thought I was going to the Bay Area originally and was ready to pay $1200+ for a studio. Sacto doesn't seem bad at all.

According to cost of living calculator at homefair.com, $100,000 in College Park, MD is equivalent to $100,638 in Sacto.

you'll never go back. california sucks you in and keeps you. wait until your first summer without humidity!

50 headed to folsom in the morning and evening from sacto is not pretty, don't live downtown unless you really have to. better off to live near work and drive the 20 min downtown when you go out. 50 has by far the worst traffic jams in the city area. n/s (99, 5) aren't bad at all. in general the e/w (bus 80, 50) get schlockered everyday.

There are some nice places up the hill east that have a more country feel but are about 10 min from Folsom. Nice little town if you didn't fly out for an interview.

Yeah, I interviewed in Santa Clara and it was awesome there. I figure Sacto shouldn't be too much worse.

When they were drawing upn the plans to make Santa Clara they copied the ones from Heavan. When they drew up the plans for Sacto they copied Fresno's. It's like the difference between Heavan and Hell..or Fresno.

Santa Clara gets a nice ocean breeze to cool it off in the summer..Sacto..well let's say you get a nice Electric Bill for the AC you'll definitely need to keep your ass from melting in the summer.

Anything's better than Merced in the Summer. It get's so hot here you have to fight with the flies to find shade
