i just found out that i'm going to be moving to sacramento for my new job, and I've been on the east coast for pretty much the past 15 years. I have no idea what to expect, and kinda anxious/nervous about it. Whats the city like? Whats the nightlife like? And what about the people? (I'm 23)

The city is bustling from 7am-10am and 4pm-7pm...stay away from freeways then. The nightlife consists of nothing like SF or LA, but there are a few clubs open. The people are nice, but usually hurried. Which area of sacramento will you be living in?

In my opinion the city isn't all that great. Where are you going to be working exactly ? You might consider living out in the suburbs a little (Elk Grove, Roseville)

I second this. The areas outside the city are pretty good. Elk Grove and Roseville as mentioned. There is some new development over in North Hylands I think. Davis is the other way and prices are higher because its a colelge town but its pretty nice there. Of course, there is always traffic during rush hour going to these areas since everyone lives there.

what about mass transporation? I'm looking at houses south of downtown, like 10-15 miles away, and it all involves I-5, or 99 to get into downtown. I'm assuming thats gona be gridlock during rushhour. Is there a lightrail or anything that connects south of the city to downtown?

what is it exactly about the city that you hate? crime? nothing to do?

hey I work across for capitol park!

its "cool" to hate on sacramento but it isnt that bad. Whatever you are looking for you will find it, its 2 hours from the coast and 2 hrs from the mountains, plenty of places to shop and eat. Its been a while since I have been in the local club scene, its kinda harsh to compare sac's club scene to SF or LA because...well SF and LA are world class cities.

Sprawl is the biggest problem for sac right now, it leads to terrible congestion on sac's infrastructure. Since you are goin to work downtown, I suggest finding a place that has RT close by, parking downtown is pitiful and costly.

I am sure I can come up with some more info....

so what kind of work are you going to be doing?

First off, Sacramento has a wide variety of communites, with a large variation in condition. For instance, my family lives in south Sacramento in an area called Pocket or Greenhaven. It's a nice community, with few lower-income areas. A bit more south is the Meadowview area, which is a much lower-income area. So you really need to check things out. As a reference point, I lived right near Kennedy High School. Morning commute to downtown by car on I-5 around 8 am was 15-20 minutes. Is your job going to have parking downtown? If not, you may need to pay for a parking space or look into public transportation. I rarely took light rail or buses because it was more convenient for me to drive. I went to high school in Carmichael (near the Watt exit of Highway 50), and the morning commute was not bad. If you go a little more east on 50, you have Sunrise and Zinfandel exits, and traffic is always bad here.

Crime can be a problem depending on where you live. I didn't go out much to clubs or whatnot, but as was said earlier, there are a few to choose from. Having lived in the Bay Area now for 6 years, the biggest difference I would say is the layout. Things in Sacramento are much more spread out. I would say the Bay Area does not have any real defined suburbs, where as Sacramento has many outlying areas. I would think it might just take some research on your part to decide on a location.

RT is regional transit, its the bus and light rail system. I bus into downtown, takes me about 25-30 mins. Light rail would be a great option, it was recently extended out into south sac but I dont know where abouts.

I live in north sac.

are you looking at a home or appt?

do a yahoo for sacramento regional transit and you will get all the info you need, I highly reccomend using the public system, downtown parking sucks.

south sac definitely has its share of bad spots. the land park area would be a great place to settle into but its pricey. stay away from meadowview and freeport areas (oak park too), laguna and elk grove are good places to live, those are a little more south. I can't think of the name of the neighborhood next to the river off of I5 but it is a nice place too, it will come to me *edit greenhaven mentioned above*

It's not that bad. There will be more diversity than you're use to, being from the east cost. Typical high school usually has a student population that speaks 25-30 languages. You'll get cultures you've never heard of and smell stuff you're not use to. It gets hot as heck during the summers, getting into the high 100s for weeks on end.

I live in Natomas, 12 minutes to and from work, which is located in downtown Sacramento. PArking meters are really strict, so get a legit parking spot in a parking structure, bike, or take the bus/light rail.

Otherwise, it's like any other city and it's what you make of it.

I know that recently, there was a a new development in south sac that had homes going for the prices like those above. The development was new, but it was surrounded by a pretty low income neighborhood.

I think that is what you are looking at above...that looks like its in the florin/meadowview area. Not a good place. Low income, and it can be pretty rough. try looking in the pocket/greenhaven area.

Lot of snobs in this thread.

Sacto CAN'T be compared to SF or LA as they're MUCH OLDER cosmopolitan cities. One day, it'll be as big as LA in the best and worst of ways. Right now, the city is growing by leaps and bounds.

I'd say it's no different than ANY large sprawling American city with commutes and manicured burbs.

The good thing about Sacto is its convenient location between SF (culture, etc) and Tahoe (skiing/hiking/water sports/gambling). 2 hrs in either direction gets you into world class destinations.

The weather is typically Californian. Lots of sunshine! Too hot in summer though--typical valley temps of over 100 degrees.

FWIW, the cow statements you read here are ignorant jibes. Cows can be seen 30 minutes away in Davis--NOT Sacto, as Sacto is a relatively new suburban sprawl. At least the city is new, so you'll have nice new shopping centers and whatnot.

Nightlife is there if you want it as well.
