I'm from NYC dude. @ssrape on rent is my natural habittat
That's because the NYC landlords are required to subsidize people in rent controlled apartments. So because you are unlucky enough not to live in one, landlords have to get the money from somewhere. Somewhere meaning your wallet. So really you are paying rent plus a stiff tax to support and subsidize luckier or savior people. It's called social justice.

"Cool spot?" OP would probably fit right in at Hillcrest. University Avenue goes right through there too if you are looking for almost a direct route to SDSU.

Make fun (because that's the gay area) but that's actually not a bad area to live. I have a friend who lives in University Heights and get down there from time to time.

Yep. Bronx Pizza, Mr. A's, the best coffee shops and hairstylists... it's a pretty cool place and I've made an afternoon out of it many times.

Not "making fun" of anyone though. Just implying we know something about the OP we don't really know and which might make him uncomfortable. It is a little weird to be bombarded with "get tested" HIV PSAs when passing through.

Maybe you and beast missed the poster who said "the only answer that can address MOST of your points would be la jolla." with no smiley.
You realize that there is a reason he emphasized "most" and didn't use the word "all," right?

 Fair enough.

Ever been to Bread and Cie? I love that place. Only reason I feel a little strange when I go there is I'm usually sitting with a couple guys and none of us are gay.

I've been talking with recruiters in sd the past month and it baffles me how multiple ones tell me finding my salary range there is rare, when its a little more than I currently make but the cost of living is like 1.5 or more there.

you'll get higher salaries around Santa Monica (in LA)

This worries me a little, as I'm currently interviewing for a job in San Diego. The salary needs to be approx 25-30% higher than what I was getting in NC to make up for the difference.

Spent Xmas down in SD - what a fantastic community of people compared to Silicon Valley. Traffic is pretty decent, housing is significantly cheaper and much nicer, better weather, nice beaches, great nightlife, soooooooo many great breweries.

If SDSU, you can catch the trolley near Olde Town & OB.

What school are you going to? Based on that the recommendations would change.

if i move from MD to CA it's going to be to san diego, not LA, and no way i'm commuting lol.

You'd have to be out of your mind to commute from San Diego to Santa Monica. It's not even doable... no way.

One of my wife's best friends used to commute from Carlsbad to Irvine every day. She was a day trader so she had to leave well before the traffic builds but that's 70 miles one way. Carlsbad is North County San Diego (where I live). San Diego to Santa Monica would be more like 135 miles one way in some of the worst traffic in the nation.

i don't even know how far that specific distance is, but i know LA to SD is like an hour or 90 minutes or so, been 6 years since i flew to LA then drove to SD, but my commute now is 30 minutes and that is borderline what i will commute.

the thing is there are a lot of dev jobs in the SD area, but none (that i've talked to) are willing to pay for talent.

Schools were out and many people take time off so traffic has been decent the past couple weeks. That will change next Monday.

The 5 freeway is by far the worst for commuting traffic.

(just saw your edit so just requoting it)

the first time i went to SD i stayed in carlsbad, i liked it there.

the last time i went last november was in 92128, which i also really enjoyed. we were like 15 minutes drive from del mar beach which was a fun time.

oh also, my current time to work is 6:30 - 2:30, so if i moved out there, i'd like to try and get the same type of schedule, which is usually pretty easy to do as a developer since you can basically do your work whenever you need to. i'd miss all traffic at those times for the most part, but still i wouldn't want more than a 30 minute commute.

i'm in the DMV area right around 495 which is arguably has the worst traffic in the country, so i'm used to this shit, but i hate it.

I've lived here for almost 20 years and my wife and I bought our house in 1999 when prices were reasonable. Our mortgage payment is less than what you would pay to rent a 2 bedroom apartment. I guess I'm economically viable.

My commute is 34 miles one way and it takes me almost an hour on most days. It's funny, when I first got the call for this job I asked where it was located and when they told me I said no way. So they said, what would it take for you to consider it? So I threw out a number and they said okay. I should have thrown out a higher number. I've been here for 5 years now.
