My brother who lives in SD showed a picture of someone kayaking down his street earlier today. Triple overhead wave sizes tomorrow along the coast. The Venice pier closed. Not sure about the SM one but I wouldn't be surprised if it did too. El Nino finally got serious.

To OP - rent is actually affordable in Pacific Beach, imo. It's a bit further from downtown San Diego, but if the beach life is your thing, I'd definitely look there.

You can find a good 1BR in PB for $1400/month. In Santa Monica it's like $2300, if not more. SD is a lot cheaper than LA. OC is in between LA and SD pricing. If you do know of anything cheaper and not a bare bones dump in SM, please let me know, because I'll be moving there in March.

Depends on what you like, I don't care much for the beach in SD, its better farther north, and I don't drink much, so bars and breweries don't do much for me. We go for the zoo and museums, wild animal park, food, Fillipi's pizza, various other places. I do like junk so I visit the big and small swap meets. University and second have great used book stores. We love old town and the Mexican Cafe. Some great stores around if you are into vinyl.

Given the time frame, I'd plan on staying in hotel/motel for a week while I looked around more. This is the off season so maybe not that bad.
