Moving to SF bay area

Hey

I was curious where some low rent, near good transportation, near good night life areas are?

I lived in San Diego for a while and a mix between PB and downtown would be ideal for me- =D

I know a lot of AT is bay area residents, so if you could help out, that'd be sweet!

Berkeley is the best place ever. There's even legal marijuana shops there. And they give out free needles also, if that's your thing.

Low rent isnt going to happen unless you head north (Richmond) or south (Fremont, Hayward). That commute would be a pain. Honestly, anywhere near "night life" is going to cost you. And cost you a lot! Berkeley is incredible, just ignore all the ignorant haters.

OP, get some roommates. If you're going to Cal, live in or near Berkeley or somewhere right near a BART station that can get you to Cal within 15 minutes.

There are no true "low rent" areas anywhere close to Berkeley. Even the hood is expensive when compared to many other parts of the country.

As for nightlife...there's nothing like meeting a girl while protesting at the Marine Recruiting Station...

I've worked in/around Berkeley, Emeryville, Richmond for years...you couldn't pay me to live in most parts of any of them...

I lived here for the last few years in grad school. This was between 2000 and 2002. It was a small (<300 sq ft) parlor level studio. Rent was $790 when i moved out.

If you'll stay up all night taking care of my baby boy so my wife and I can get some damn sleep you can live in my house for free. It's 1.5 miles from campus (bus directly to campus runs every 10 minutes at peak hours), has plenty of bars 'n' restaurants within walking distance, and a BART stop three blocks away for easy SF access. (Of course you'll fail out of school because you're sleep deprived. And you won't be able to enjoy any of the cool stuff because you'll be taking care of a baby all night. Hey, that's kind of like my life right now. Why o why did we decide to have kids?)

I currently live here, which is amazingly close. Its running $1690 for 2 bedroom, 1.5 bath apartment-- relatively good place. Rent is considered about average in the Berkeley area. Riding a bike, its about 2-6 minutes from the campus depending on which part you need to get to.
