Well, Somaliland to be exact. They're doing their damnedest to differentiate themselves from the rest of Somalia, and are hoping to become internationally recognized as an independent state.

I've accepted a teaching position on the horn of Africa beginning this summer. It's in a small village outside of Hargeisa, the Somaliland capital. Should be an interesting experience. I'll have to wear a hijab every day, cover my arms and legs and hair, and I'll be escorted by a very large gun-wielding guard when outside of the school. No television, no alcohol, lots of camels, satellite internet, and a close proximity to Ethiopia.

Should there be any interest, I'll post some web albums of the country and my impeccable Somali fashion upon my arrival.

Update #1:

I hate to disappoint you all, but no, pirates did not get me, and I am fully alive and functional in Somaliland at the current moment. My departure date got pushed back until August 14, and it took me 4 days to get here with 7 flights. I've only been here a few days at this point, so my experiences are still somewhat limited.

The internet, on the other hand, has been a little sub-par. If I do come across any questions though, I'll be sure to answer them, it just may come a bit late, and/or a bit sporadically.

First impressions...

- The people are, in general, extremely nice and extremely happy to have us here. As an educator, I feel incredibly well-respected and appreciated.
- The attire for women is, at most, a minor inconvenience.
- The guards that are required by law to accompany us outside of the school feel completely unnecessary. It was odd seeing them walk around so lackadaisically with giant guns slung over their shoulder though.
- The food is rather unexciting, but I've got my fingers crossed that more variety will appear after Ramadan. I'm not getting my hopes up though after talking to current staff.
- The sunsets and night skies are some of the most beautiful I've ever seen in my life.

My teaching assignment has been updated, and it looks as if I'll be teaching nothing but Computer Science! So if anyone has a good stash of CS curriculum, let me know.

Pics forthcoming in a day or so if folks are still interested.

Update #2:

Not many, but here are a small handful of pics. More to come.

Update #3:

Successful start to the school year! The ancient, POS computers I have to work with are literally sucking the life out of me, but otherwise all is well! Haven't been shot yet, so I'm going to go ahead and consider things a success.

Couple more pics thrown up, including my "lab".

Milk should be interesting. I can't see the meat being very flavorful or tender but I'm just guessing.

What made you decide to do this? When do you go?

Actually, the main meat is goat. Camel is reserved for special occasions, and it's supposed to be delicious. Go figure.

I decided to go for it because the school itself is pretty awesome, started by a NY banker that decided Wall Street wasn't for him. It gives good kids a chance they otherwise wouldn't have. The start date is August 1, but I'll most likely show up a little bit early to get my feet on the ground. I'll be teaching some English, but I'm more excited about the computer classes I'll be teaching, which I think will be the bulk majority of my work.

Why the heck would anyone put themselves in danger like that?

It's actually relatively safe. I won't even remotely be considering coming anywhere close to Mogadishu. Educators are very well respected in Somaliland, and the region itself is separated from the rest of Somalia by another de facto independent state (Puntland) and a big chunk of Ethiopia.

Yeah, you might need some time to get acclimated to the food, weather and water. Make sure to get your shots, though I don't know how long they're good for and how long you're staying.

What language do they speak there? If you are teaching english does that mean you know the native language?

Please do. Can't say I'd ever choose to experience Somalia, even if Somaliland is supposed to be much nicer.

They speak Somali and Arabic, and no, neither one of those was a foreign language I studied. That being said, the students apparently have a pretty extensive English vocabulary, but no real grasp of sentence structure or grammar. I'm looking forward to picking up some Arabic while there.

Well, I can't say I'm going for the vacation potential of the place either. Whether I love it or hate it, it will be a good experience that I'm sure I won't regret.

I would put myself in danger if it were really awesome or really high paying. This doesn't sound like either of those.

I would not have considered this if I truly felt I was going to be fearing for my life every day. But I do put it in the category of really awesome.

Wow that will certainly be an experience of a lifetime. I hope it turns out great for you! Still even if it's safer than the rest of Somalia it still can't be all that safe. Somalia is still one of the most dangerous countries in the world. There's always the possibility of political upheaval and unrest. Still I wish you the best!

It's not often you find one who is willing to step up and put themselves in such a position in order that they may help others. I am deeply impressed.

I'm sure it will be an experience of a lifetime, and I sincerely hope it turns out to be everything you wanted, and more.

Best of Luck and Stay Safe.

Thank you! I really appreciate the well wishes.

Wait wait wait... so you... female? Unpossible! This is ATOT, there are no females here!

And not unpossible! Although my proof will be thoroughly disappointing. Cause, you know, I'll be wearing a hijab. And essentially a muumuu.

Why would you support the anti-women fundamentalist Islam BS and wear that garbage?

I genuinely appreciate it. These are good kids that just sort of got the short end of the stick. I feel pretty fortunate that I get to work with them, while at the same time seeing a pretty unconventional part of the world.
