I decided to go for it because the school itself is pretty awesome, started by a NY banker that decided Wall Street wasn't for him. It gives good kids a chance they otherwise wouldn't have. The start date is August 1, but I'll most likely show up a little bit early to get my feet on the ground. I'll be teaching some English, but I'm more excited about the computer classes I'll be teaching, which I think will be the bulk majority of my work.
I think it's a good decision...but I also think some weapons training is in order.

You misunderstand the school I'm working in. The school was started by an American, and staffed by mostly native English speakers (Americans, Brits, Aussies), with a couple other nations for good measure. We are teaching Somali children, but we are not teaching from Islamic textbooks.
We are teaching the same classes that kids here in the US learn. English, Math, Science, Computer Skills...
We are giving the boys and girls an education, and teaching the girls that they can be successful in whatever they choose to do. I would not willingly move to a place in order to teach other females principles that belittle my intelligence as well as theirs.

There are so many under-educated inner city children in my country, I just can't imagine wasting precious teaching resources like you on a ass-backwards part of the world like that.

I would put myself in danger if it were really awesome or really high paying. This doesn't sound like either of those.
Look, I may not agree with the concept of having to wear a hijab, but that's not exactly the most important battle I'm choosing to address.
I feel very poorly for those kids that they have already been dismissed by people because they happen to be Muslim. That in itself does not make them bad people. People can be Muslim without being "bat-shit crazy islamists".
I truly feel that the key to the development of a nation - ANY nation, first world or not - is through education. And you're turning up your nose at someone's effort to do that.

I'm an idealist. Absolutely.
But just like GTaudiophile said, you have to start somewhere. Maybe an idealist is the catalyst it takes to force change over time. I don't agree with having to wear the hijab, but come on, it's a progress. Rosa Parks had to refuse to give up her seat long before blacks were allowed to vote.
You can't have every aspect of people's mindsets change in one instant.
