Hopefully you have a better time than I did during Operation Restore Hope.

It's actually relatively safe. I won't even remotely be considering coming anywhere close to Mogadishu. Educators are very well respected in Somaliland, and the region itself is separated from the rest of Somalia by another de facto independent state (Puntland) and a big chunk of Ethiopia.

It's safe until Somalia decides they want their land back. Then foreign teachers are going to be the primary meat there : p

Are there not under educated children in Denver that could use your help, to make this country better?

Or is it all about the $$$$$$, which I guess I can understand.

It's not about money, I can promise that.

Rill22 has spent the better part of the last decade educating herself and the world around her. She is just continuing along this path.

And yes, gentlemen, she has more balls and kick-ass in her left pinky fingernail than most of us hope to have in a lifetime.

Actually, the main meat is goat. Camel is reserved for special occasions, and it's supposed to be delicious. Go figure.

I decided to go for it because the school itself is pretty awesome, started by a NY banker that decided Wall Street wasn't for him. It gives good kids a chance they otherwise wouldn't have. The start date is August 1, but I'll most likely show up a little bit early to get my feet on the ground. I'll be teaching some English, but I'm more excited about the computer classes I'll be teaching, which I think will be the bulk majority of my work.

i had camel meat when i was in Kenya a few years back and it was quite tasty.

enjoy your travels.

That doesnt answer my question.

Let me guess, you're doing this as part of your contribution to your religion?

I hope we don't have to send in the army to rescue you from the kidnapers.

Insane would be an understatement.

But good luck anyway, it should be a memorable experience, providing you live to remember it.

Planning on possibly going shooting with my brother before departure. Never hurts to know how to handle yourself, right?

if it was me taking a trip to that part of the world I'd make sure I'd have a sidearm, an assault/combat rifle, plenty of ammuniton and preferably a few grenades waiting for me outside the airport. I wouldn't trust a local with my safety for a second.

Oh no. No no no no no. No thank you, not at all.

Didn't quite expect this to turn into such a lawn chair and popcorn fest. But I suppose I should have, it's ATOT after all, right?

I've informed myself the best I can, thought it through, and I won't be pulling out at this point. It's certainly not about the money (which per year is probably less than most of ATOT makes per month).

As much as I'd like to claim complete nobility and honor, I've got my own selfish reasons as well. It'll be awesome working with these kids, but for better or for worse, I just think it'll be a cool experience, and have no real desire to be a teacher as a career here in the United States. Since I quit my job working with GTaudiophile two years ago to start traveling, I haven't really had the desire to stop, and don't plan on it any time soon.

And a few Blackwater guards.

But why not somewhere more politically stable, less violent, more tolerant of women, like India or China?

I wouldn't trust those cowboys for a second either, I had a sergent who dealt with them in Iraq, he says they're a bunch of "shoot now, shoot later and then shoot some more" retards too stupid for the real military.

You saying only religious people go overseas to help children in developing countries?

No doubt she is doing it in the name of secularism, she will take off her Islamic clothing and put on a western style miniskirt and encourage her students to do the same, then toss out the Quran and teach evolution.

Somalia... it's the worst place in the world. I figure they need more help than China does. And there's already a school there with a good infrastructure, good educators that will help me get on my feet (considering my lack of educational experience), and those kids deserve just as much a chance as anyone else. I think reporters that dive into the heart of a war zone are crazier than I am.

And besides, being there will put me in closer proximity to seeing other African nations.

And come on, you should be nicer to to yourself, GT. I'm currently sharing with a 62 year old woman who didn't know what the Berlin Wall was. Or cut and paste. Or that a laptop's battery is NOT the same thing as being able to get wifi.

I think you have good intentions but I can't help thinking that you're naive in doing this. That's one of the most lawless areas in the world. Just because Ethiopia came over and bitchslapped a bunch of terrorists doesn't mean it's safe.
