The food is... carbtastic. Rice, pasta, some more rice, some Somali chapati (like Indian naan), a little bit more pasta, and maybe some potatoes thrown in for good measure. Cabbage, carrots, onions and tomatoes are about the extent of our vegetables.

I do not exaggerate when it comes to the starch overload... dinner tonight was pasta with potatoes and chapati. We have a local cook, but I can't say I'm overly excited every day about the meals. Everything is good, it's just carbs to the max. I'd give anything right now for a fresh salad.

I'll be going to Ethiopia soon, I'll let you know how it compares.

Eww. Well a lot of that has to do with poverty of course carbtastic + a small side of veggies is whats cheap so it's whats for dinner. Hopefully you get a little more variety in Ethiopia. As you probably know Ethiopian cuisine is actually somewhat well known globally. Stay safe and have a GREAT time!

And to check against the expectations of some of the other posters in this thread, how much have you been harassed and denigrated and assaulted so far?

Not to speak for the OP but my guess would be little. Probably get's some bad looks from locals sometimes. Haters love to hate when it comes to travelling overseas and usually have little idea what they are talking about. Which isn't to say there aren't dangers there!

Zero. If anything, people are curious about you, and once they hear you are a teacher, their faces light up.

That being said, when they see a white person, most of them usually think the UN or an NGO, both of which they are extremely skeptical of. Being a teacher is an incredibly honorable thing to them, just short of "being a prophet", as I was told the other day.

As for harassment, it seems so ludicrously out of the question... not once have I ever felt uncomfortable, in any way at all. If you dress modestly, you'll get looks of course simply by the fact that your skin color doesn't blend in, but people are extraordinarily nice. I don't feel that the requirement of having guards is even necessary, but we follow the law to be sure.

So no, no harassment, denigration, or assaults so far.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not here to bash you but I get the feeling those people are only friendly because they know you have guards. I mean just look at the madness in post-spring Egypt/Libya now...

If it was only because of the guard they wouldn't be nice to her, they would simply not be asses.

Install Ubuntu on the old computers and introduce them to the world of open source. Give them one of the free downloadable books by Richard Stallman.

Before you leave you should try piracy at least once. Something to tell the grandchildren.

Get an eye patch. You can be called Captain Jihab Jane.

Stay safe
