Anyone here ever move between states without first having a job? Was it possible for you to get an apartment in the new state without a job there?

I am planning on moving states and have the money saved up for security, first, second and possibly third month rent and want to know if anyone has been able to get an apartment with just that? How difficult was it?

Getting a job in that time frame would not be difficult. I am currently working on getting a job in the state but I am also constrained on time, I will be moving, job or not.

I think it would be difficult to get an apartment with no job.

Why do you HAVE to move right away?

I moved +1,000 miles without one. I stayed with someone for about a month while I got a job and a first paycheck. Moved out, stayed employed full-time, got my state residency then went to college.

Yes. Thankfully I had family to help out where we moved to. It was the best decision I ever made, considering I would have literally gone nowhere and probably still be unemployed 8 years later if I didn't.

Where we live now is directly affecting my and my fiancee's health. We considered moving elsewhere in-state but nothing compares to where we actually want to move.

I've only had one prospective landlord follow up with or even ask about a job.

If you have first, last and deposit most will happily have you sign a lease.

We're going to be moving from Santa Fe, NM to Portland, OR with nothing but a savings early next year and don't anticipate any problems finding a place to live.

I've done it a few times, but you really need some verifiable source of cash (savings, retirement, investing, whatever) to show that you can pay up if you are unable to find a job or some other random shit happens.

I haven't not been able to point to a savings account and CDs, so I'm not sure how 3 months-worth of funds will work for you. You can try a co-sign with your parents or something, or maybe apply for Section 8; look for section 8 housing? (though life would suck ass).

Oh, it's two of you? I suppose fiance's finances are included in that 3 month's funds?

If you have reason to be confident about job prospects, then mention that to the prospective landlord--your industry, upcoming interviews, anything that would convince them that you aren't going to be a headache. If you have a spotless record with past landlords, those records will certainly help. (they do check)

I moved provinces over 2500 km away without a job on a whim (quit my job and decided to move). Best decision ever, took me about 2 months to get a much better job and haven't looked back since. I lived with my friend at first though and got an apartment a few months later, though was due to him moving away. Had about 6 months savings.

Why not move in with someone looking for a roommate in the area first though craigslist if the apartment thing becomes an issue? You will need more then 3 months though unless you are fine working a potential min wage job while trying to get something better.

You have a fiancee and you only have 3 months savings between the 2 of you? That's extremely little for 2 people. Finances may break you if you aren't strong willed, you need a contingency plan should neither of you get a good job right away once moving.

You should also be applying to jobs in that state right away to get kick started.

My 34 yr. old attorney daughter just did this. She and her husband and three boys moved to Wisc. from Calif. with no jobs. I thought she was crazy. Turns out, two state jobs in her field (HR law) opened up, she applied for both, got one, interviewed for the other, got it and is now working for $30K more than she got in the first job. Not bad, but then again, she's my daughter

I would never do this. in 1975, My wife and I moved 300 miles away from where we grew up, but I had a job nailed down first.

I had a friend move from LA to Austin without one thinking she could get a job in 6 months. 2 years later she is a Pilates instructor and she's living paycheck to paycheck.

She's hot, has a Master's and 4 years core experience. Previous job in LA she was making almost 6 figures.

When I moved up to Alaska, I did have a job, but there is a college nearby. There are a lot of people renting out rooms which were kinda cheap, so you may want to look into that. Then when you find a job, you can find something more permanent.

I moved from California to Ohio without a job and then back to California, then to North Carolina. The most important thing is to be honest with yorself about your ability to get a job, and if necessary if you are willing to take a lesser job to supplement if you cant find a desirable position and modest housing.

I made the mistake the first time i moved to Ohio, thinking i could find a Job in no time a feild i had very little experience. I had a tough time, it took a stroke of luck to get me right. The second time around I had a better grasp of what it would take to get a Job quickly, and had a less difficult time adjusting, finding housing, etc,etc..
