Every ipod and probably most every wma player these days can play lossless using Apple lossless and wma-lossless, respectively.
There is simply no need for flac that I see except better compression and higher sampling rates that are far beyond the capabilities
of most peoples' equipment. Finally, Apple's codec uses AAC which is a standard in case you want to bitch about that.

Flac has it's place, but for the most part it isn't needed for simple stuff like mp3 players unless you are a sound engineer or you know...what's her name

Damn her and all her high-quality masters

I can't tell the difference between 192kbps CBR and lossless most of the time on my HT system. I rip to V0 VBR MP3s because it's the best balance of quality (~220-250kbps average bitrate), size and compatibility for my needs.

Unless you have REALLLLLY trained ears, you're not going to hear the difference between 320 and lossless.
Lossless is mostly for elistist nerds to brag about.

Eh-hem.

Oh man, that sounds like a fun game. I wanna play

That depends on the song.

Although no one will admit it, Nelly Furtado's "say it right" has a nice beat to it, and you can identify different bitrates pretty easily on modest equipment (my Mirage's) or even crappy stuff (using some $30 logitechs right now) depending on what is being reproduced.

I remember a few years ago, an AT'er did a thread where he posted samples of "lossless" versus "lossy" compression and asked people to vote on which was which in a poll.

He posted the files in such a way that you couldn't tell which was which - I think he ripped them from CDs, then re-encoded them into WAV format or something.

Anyway, the reason I remember it is because a lot of people got it wrong.

I have no idea who the poster was or how to even find it since the search is terrible. Maybe someone else remembers?

lmao, MS Dawn?

AFAIK, ALAC uses an M4A container but is way more closely related to FLAC than it is to AAC.

QFT, the drum line gets annihilated by MP3 compression.

It's really bad too....I doubt anyone WOULDN'T notice.....but I still listen to it too since it doesn't matter much on cheap ear buds at the gym*

Ugh but you know this reminds me of the first time I heard Billy Joel's hit in 1980. From Glass Houses Still Rock and Roll and I will NEVER forget that pounding-pounding-pounding bass coming from those Patricia 800's.

I was 16 at the time and you know how that pounding makes a young woman feel...
