You could also use Exact Audio Copy (EAC) w/ LAME. However, I prefer CDex myself...

Another vote for EAC + LAME.

Personally, I use Ogg Vorbis rather than MP3, so I use Vorbis Tools along with EAC

EAC with Lame 3.90.3 --alt-preset extreme

check outhydrogenaudio for all the information that you could possibly need about Lossy and Lossless audio.

I use EAC + LAME for ripping from a CD, and the RazorLame frontend if I need to encode recorded WAV files.

Why bother with another program when EAC can do everything itself!

Just my £0.02

Hmm, I thought EAC was primarily for ripping CDs and encoding them. I use RazorLame when I have a file recorded in SoundForge that I need to convert to MP3 format (I think Lame produces better output and has more options than SF's built-in MP3 encoder).

Why do you choose 'preset extreme' over 'standard'? The increase in sound quality is marginal at best but the bitrate is ~25% (?) higher.

Most of the known problem cases for 'standard' are due to limitations of the mp3 format itself (and to a lesser degree the psychoacoustic model that LAME uses), you aren't likely to see much improvement even if you switched to 'insane'.

Besides, the main reason for the existence of 'extreme' is only to discourage people from trying to improve 'standard' by experimenting with additional command-line options (and screwing up in the process).

when i was using --alt-preset extreme it just gave me a warm fuzzy feeling over --aps.

Now, for the last ~1.5years i have been using mpc for all my encoding adventures, and i couldnt be happier. (well, if there was hardware support for musepack that would make me happier......but until then i live.)
