itunes. the search is great.

as for tagging.. tag and rename.
but....full automation of taggingis only possible with full albums. if u have scraps here and there, there is only so much that can be done to help speed the process.

A lot of people, myself included, abhor itunes. No reason to get into it here, as it's been done to death, but I'd recommend searching here & in software to become familiar with the issues before installing it.

also itunes doesnt do anything any of the other players dont, if your mp3s are all tagged correctly any player from MWP to winamp and even freeking REAL, whatever has a medial library type function in it will work fine, if thats the function you want

Windows Explorer: good.
KDE Konquerer: good.
Gnome Nautilus: good.
Apple Finder: good.

That's 4 great problems that do their jobs well.

Why bother making your own folder when software like itunes will make a layout just like that and all you have to do is drag the songs into the program.

because i tunes renames your files for 1
2) it sucks witha 6000+ song lib
3) the interface is crap
4) it does nothing that any other player doesnt
5) its a resource hog

i also just hate anyprogram that trys to do stuff for me

...because EAC and MAREO have already been set up to put songs in the proper folders?

This solves many problems, not the least of which being that iTunes is only dual-platform, where the need for music is entirely independent of platform. Oh, and that iTunes is bloated.

Whats MAREO

i rip with EAC& lame to the desktop and then just move the properly tagged files onto the other HDD where the music is located

Well maybe you hate software personally I would rather use software to do stuff for me. Maybe I'm just more efficent like that. How much reasource could you possible lose to Itunes. I have a 700 Mhz duron with 348 ram and having Itunes open doesn't make a bit of differnce as to speed.

I find that iTunes is a resource hog on my PC. If I am just surfing the net and listening to music then it is okay, but if I play a game I really notice a loss of framerate. With WinAmp, on the other hand, I don't notice any system performance issues.

What drives me nuts with iTunes is if you go and edit the file name, iTunes doesn't "keep up" with the file and you have to redo it in iTunes. Heaven forbid if you change the file name. Also I have been getting into OGG and FLAC music files. You can get a patch to listen to Ogg Vorbis files in iTunes however the ID tags don't seem to import properly and FLAC does not seem to be supported in iTunes.

I have iTunes installed, but I still do most of my music listening and navigation through simple Windows explorer folders, playlists and WinAmp.

I recommend using Microsoft Windows XP. Like how mine is setup? Don't forget to use the Thumbnail view for Album Covers

Use of a hierarchal file storage system is really the epitome of efficiency, and applies beyond just musical files.

Also makes backup much more efficient as well.

i prefer windows file naming.... I use a few different folder structures and no program jukebox type of program can do that at all yet.

for example

artist>album>song
soundtrack>movie>song

2 different ways I have my music and any jukebox program will want to organize thins one way (which i hate).

Explain to me how backing up your own hierarchal file storage is more efficent then backing up Itunes hierarchal file storage. I would realy like to know how a folder created by windows is easyer to back up then one created by Itunes.

The backup comment applied to hierarchal file storing in general (as the previous comment ended, " and applies beyond just musical files.") - not specifically for music related files.

Glad to see this thread was moved to the appropriate forum as well.

i dont hate all software just software that thinks its way of doing things is better then mine

as ActuaryTm said a hierarchal file storage system is pretty much unbeatable in terms of speed and organization

and as other mentioned itunes has other issues with multipial file formats and naming issues, also with 6000+ songs it uses like 50 megs of memory

it has a horrid minimal mode and i cant put it always on top

also there pretty much no use in useing it if you dont have a ipod, and even if you do there is a winamp plugin for that anyway
