Does anyone know of an MP3 player that has Optical output and has starting storage of near 1.5 gig and up?

A PC with a SoundStorm certified motherboard or Audigy series (don't know which ones have optical) and a hard drive of proper size should work .

Yeah; it seems kind of pointless to make a small, portable MP3 player, and then add the extra expense of an optical out, which will ONLY be useful for a large, immobile speaker system.

I didn't think there would be one out there. However Jeff7, the thought of one with a base station or linking station to my home stereo that had an optical out would work as well.

Of course there is one!
iRiver iHP
It's a HDD player with capacities of 10/20/40GB and it has optical OUT

Has other wonderful features too

BTW the optical out has volume control but since it is done at CPU level it is a true optical line-out, it does bypass the internal amplifier

Ah, base station. That'd make sense.

And, Wiktor, you've proven me wrong. I know better now.
Lithium polymer battery in it too. Nifty.

Yes an awsome player by all means - wish I had one, too bad iRiver doesn't advertise like crazy Still not many have even heard of them (and they make exceptional flash and slimX players too) Although you hardware guys should now better

At least they keep the price very low for US market, their only advertising channel is the Internet. Not much they can do to compete against iPod on the mass market, but computer geeks know what's good for them (and they are very popular among the head-fi.org community).

Oh, and what's the difference between iRiver and everyone else?
- Britney has one
LOL bet you didn't know

You can get NetMD devices that have optical out so I don't see why you shouldn't be able to find a MP3 device with optical out.

The main reason for the question is that I need to play several hours of music at a group function, and though I haven't established what receiver I'll be using as of yet, there is a good chance it might have the optical in. So I figured what the hell, might as well see if there is one out there with the optical output and hook it all up the right/best way and then take the ah heck home to use there between different areas of the home using optical as the best connection when possible. . Not really ready for a media server - not liking where they are right now... maybe in another year or so.

I'm confused.

You just run it Stereo and have higher quality. Receiver has to suport that though.
