the ipod is NOT "proprietary" (where did you get that word from, anyway?? you obviously don't know much about the ipod).

in fact, it would do everything you're looking to do. why do you want to use napster? by choosing your legal music service you're limiting what player you can use, as currently only the samsung hd player can play napster songs. itunes is much better imo.

i've used md players, flash-mp3 players, cd-mp3 players, and the ipod, and there is no comparison: the ipod is bar-none the best portable music player ever created. period.

Ever try to back up the contents or exrtract music from it? Or copy music you purchased off of Itunes to your HD and play it back without having to use itunes or have the PC registered to playback the tune? I think thats what they mean by "proprietary".
So why don't you just turn your purchased music into an mp3... that's what I do with all my itunes songs... and they all sound great (believe me I have a decent audio system to test them out on)... sounds good still. It's easy copying over music from the ipod... in fact there's nothing hard about it, plus it's plug and play pretty much...

I have an ipod (and love it), I was just trying to clarify what some people were questioning as the ipod being proprietary.

I'd get the iriver if money was no object.

I own the dell 20gig and I'm plenty happy.

I was thinking about getting the rio karma, but I've heard many stories of those things dying. Plus they only have a 30 day warrenty iirc.

well

i think i will stay clear of the portable MP3 players for a long while yet. i dont think the technology is where i want it to be yet, in order for these things to work for me:

1. i absolutely cannot use the drive based ones, it has to be memory based storage because i intend to use it at work, where i am extremely physically active. i often have to go in, out, on top of huge machinery and the thing will get banged up pretty good. i dont want skipping or crashing.

2. battery life isnt where i need it to be. looking for abut 20 hours+ non stop play at full volume. if it cant do that, its automatically burned for me.

3. i like napster. i hate apple. i had a very negative experience with apple a few years ago and i dont intend to use their services and give them my money.

4. it naturally has to have at least half a gig storage, nice, easy to read and operate display and control including soem eq functions (at least tone and base), ability to make a playlist and select files.

5. i want to be able to take any song, from anywhere, be it from napster, or rhapsody, or one of my CDs, and simply play it on the mp3 player which i intended to purchase and vice-versa, take any song from my mp3, rhapsody or napster and put it on CD. this i want to be simple, drag and drop and done nice , relaibale and fast. i dont want to sit tehre and study 5 different manufacturers technologies and waste my time with them. i am the customer, and if teh ywant my money, they need to make a product that will meet all the criteria i have listed.

You're looking for any of the flash players with an add-on slot. Flash memory in half gig sizes are fairly common now. Battery life is the problem of course, primarily because normal people don't need to listen to portable music for 20+ hours non-stop. The easy solution is just to have a product that takes AA or AAA batteries and bring along an extra set of NiMH's. Many players claim a 14 hour playtime, and if you don't have time in 20+ hours to swap a pair of batteries, there's more wrong with your life than poor selection of MP3 players. Finally, DRM issues plague tons of players, but there are some out there without it. You just have to learn to read between the lines.

IRriver has just released 1GB flash players in their traditional keychain size format that have basically everything you want but the battery life which will probably never happen. I don't really see why you can't have a second rechargable battery somewhere and just swap when the first one dies. 2 batteries is all you should need for 20hrs of playback.

just buy a muvo2 shell from e-bay and then slap in a 512 mb cf card (or bigger or smaller) and you have a nice, portable mp3 player for ~$100...that's what I'm in the process of doing...

What do you mean? The new iFP-7xx / iFP-8xx have excellent battery life: up to 40 hours _on single AA battery_ (from iriveramerica website).

Now, their older flash players: iFP-1/3xx had 18-20 hours (but only without eq. and playing mp3s), iFP-5xx with internal rechargable battery has up to 28 hours.

New iFP is also USB 2.0 and yes, up to 1GB, no expantion slot.

Check out iFP-1000
- built-in Digital Camera
- color lcd
- up to 35 hr. playback
the rest same as other players

That's not at full volume and with 2400mAh batteries which I wouldn't know where to get. Your typical AA rechargable batteries from Duracell and Energizer are 1800mAh.
