ok i looked around for an mp3 player because my zen v plus (a refurb) was acting too funky lately.

i settled on the fuze. sandisk says it supports msc mode, which should make it groovy with linux (indeed, it says as much on the website) and it has an sdhc card slot.

i dont want to get into why im annoyed to all hell with this thing. mtp support is funky, msc mode lets it work half-assed in rhythmbox, and the fuze doesnt read my tags so nothing is sorted well and i cant tell what is what without playing it first.

so ill play with it tomorrow and see if i can make myself happy with this thing. but what are you guys using that works well with linux? the zen v plus was great, just technically its dying.

my budget is tight, but id like any suggestions or input anyone here can give me. thanks!

I have a Zen and I love it. It does everything and more than an ipod. Only I don't get to join in all the belly-aching from my friends about problems getting media to play and transfering music around (but oh they still LOVE their ipods).

The only reason I bought one was because the price was right. 30GB model for $100. Plus on my desktop at home I run windows primarily(for gaming) so it's not that big of a deal to sync it

I don't k,now exactly what your looking for but this.... may work for you. I know it's small but it does have a microsd slot for more memory and newegg just had a deal on 8gb cards for around 12.99 shipped. And if you get the version 1 you can rockbox it, from what Ive googled quickly it looks like rockbox would wok okay in linux. And hey for 12.99 shipped you really cant go wrong on a college budget.....

Or there is also this one for a little more... and this one seems to work in lunix also...

The Sansa Clip is one of the more linux friendly devices at the moment. It works fine in mtp and msc mode for me in Ubuntu and Archlinux. Also, if you update the firmware, it has full support for OGG Vorbis and FLAC. You can usually find the 4gb model for ~$50.
