I'm not a big fan of anything SONY, but their MD players kick ass. I did a lot of research on this about a month ago, and MD mp3 players beat flash mp3 players hands down.

minidisc is a pain, if onlythey'd play mp3 and allow for data transfer, instead of that lame recording mode they force you to use to use cuz its their copy protection.

Yeah, not to mention that their OpenMG jukebox SUCKS ASS and crashes 2/3 of the time. You wanna transfer MP3s to your minidisc without the 3 strikes restriction and without quality restrictions? Open Nero, compile MP3s, burn image, mount image to 'dummy' drive (virtual CD-ROM), burn dummy drive into Minidisc with Sony's other burner software. Its way too complicated, and in the end they all get converted to ATRAC3 anyway so its nowhere near the same quality (not that ATRAC3 is that bad, but you should see what happens when you decompress and recompress an MP3...lossy compression != perfect clone!)

ipod or slimx .... data transfer is much faster than that proprietary atrac crap. my only gripe about slimx is size....but both can definitely pack more songs than MD's (even those new NetMD's too)

They do but they *convert* the mp3 to ATRAC the Sony format for MD.

As for the iPod its not as great as you think.

I bought one with 25% off retail and now I am going to sell it.

Reasons are:

The remote just plain sucks. Its a crappy shape, doesn't have an LCD on it and you can't change to a different album or play list without taking out the ipod. The clip on the remote is a JOKE I seriously don't want to know what the hell the iPod designers were thinking when they decided to shape it like that and to have the clip like that. Very weak design.

The iPod is FAR too big in my opinion. Too big to put in your pocket properly and it weighs too much. I have an MD that is MUCH smaller and more sizeable in your pocket.

The way the headphone socket at the remote end fits on to the body of the iPod is even worse! It sticks up FAR too much increasing the size of it AGAIN. Because the headphone jack sticks up so much it takes more space and I'm worried it will snape off.

Another design note is the lack of the battery. You can't take it and I've had many users complain after a years worth of usage that the battery BARELY lasts 4-6hrs. NOW is this what you want after only a years use? A product that you paid £400 and you only get 4hrs out of? What about a few years down the line what will the battery be then?

Don't get an iPod.

Get a Sony MD.

another vote for sony MD. if you are willing to live with a few software/copyright quirks, it's a great option right now. death of real-time was the biggest factor.

recorders are cheap and much faster and you can carry around a lot more music. plus battery life is great. ipod 4-6 hrs? try 24+ hrs on my mz-r900 and even more on newer models.

u see.. sony electronics and sony music have competing interests. sony music keeps crippling sony electronics ability to make kewl stuff, its quite sad. for a while sony kept coming out with tiny music players, but all were useless cuz they forced you to use attrac and check out music, so lame. they allow for minidisc because its limited to digital cassette functionality. i want to have more music then what can fit on a minidisc at 2x mode....4x mode is a joke. once u carry more minidscs around it becomes a burden.

eh...dont. i read a few reviews on cnet and they tore the muvo up.

sounds like lots of people hail the sony MD as the next best thing.....to an ipod.

i have the 10 giger and it does have some quirks...but despite what some have said, it isnt that big and cumbersome. the remote is also not that bad. there isnt an lcd...which is true...but that is something they could addon later as a $40 accessory. no biggie.

I own an old MD player (Sharp 831) and it uses real-time recording, etc. What exactly is the complaint of copyright issues? How does that work?

I have (and still use) a Sharp 722 Minidisc player/recorder, have had it for years. I was and still am to an extent all gung-ho about the advantages of using a Minidisc, but I feel my opinion is changing. I just bought my g/f an mp3 player for her b-day (Iriver 128mb).

Both technologies are great, but the rift between the two (esp $$$) are not as evident anymore. 3 or 4 years ago I wouldn't ever think of buying an MP3 player because of the outrageous cost of the memory, now it seems it's all flash memory - a lot more inexpensive to produce I guess?

I use my Minidisc to plug-into soundboards to record live shows, little baby relatives, etc. - this is one of the greatest uses and little overlooked feature of Minidisc.
