(for what it's worth though, I've never seen anyone show a valid reason why either site is not legal, or illegal for Americans to use)

My thoughts are, what if I were IN russia with say, a laptop, and while IN Russia I used allofmp3 or mp3search and then I fly back to the US, have I broken a law?

Now expand on that, prove I wasn't in Russia when I bought those songs

Either way, I'm not about to give cc info to a russian site, but I might use a one time card, or a virtual card...

I've used both Allofmp3 and mp3search I like allofmp3 twenty times better, the ability to save to custom folders automatically (drive letter:\artist name\cd title\ for example) and the ability to specify HOW the files are named by allofmp3 is priceless to me.

Nothing like downloading a couple dozen CDs from mp3search and then spending an hour sorting the dratit things.

All phonograms on MP3Search.Ru are placed according license agreement from Noncommercial Partnership "Federation of Authors and Rights holders for Collective Management of Copyright in Interactive Regime".

in soviet russia, phonogram licenses you!

Figures someone here would try to justify that either site mentioned here is legal with regards to US laws. Guess ya didn't read some of the info from allofmp3:
Is it legal to download music from AllOFMP3.com?

All the materials in MediaServices projects are available for distribution through the Internet in accordance with license # LS-3?-05-03 of the Russian Multimedia and Internet Society. Under the license terms, MediaServices pays license fees for all materials subject to the Law of the Russian Federation "On Copyright and Related Rights". All materials are available solely for personal use and must not be used for further distribution, resale or broadcasting.

The user bears sole responsibility for any use and distribution of all materials received from AllOFMP3.com. This responsibility is dependent on the national legislation in each user's country of residence. The Administration of AllOFMP3.comdoes not possess information on the laws of each particular country and is not responsible for the actions of foreign users.

How does that prove its illegal? It just says "we're not responsible... blah blah blah" That' in just about ANY sales policy online..

I've seen very compelling arguments posted that w/ the site being legal in Russia (which it is), if someone from the US were to purchase a song there and download it, that is a legal importation of a foreign product, in this case being digital but that's irrelevent under the law.

I'm not saying I know 100% either way, but just dismissing it as illegal because it's much cheaper than the US sites is shortsighted.

Amen brother. I love allofmp3.com. I don't know how many CDs I've bought (legally, here in the US so the poor little 'artist' gets his/her money) because of some stuff I have downloaded from the internet. I'd say I've spent MORE money on CDs BECAUSE of downloads from the internet. The thing is, I'm NOT going to spend $1 per song, so the 'artists' aren't LOSING any of my money by me using allofmp3.com.

Let's say I wanted to make sure I was being legal by using one of the US-based mp3 stores. Which service is best? Cheapest?

What about for video content for the new ipod videos?

Peronally, I think that an mp3 should only cost 10c each.

I'd choose the Russian site anyday over any commercial cowboys riding on the backs of the artists...

All of the "legal" sites suck, low bit rates, high cost, AND its all DRM even though you paid for it, you are highly restricted on moving it from player to player etc.

CD clubs are often cheaper including shipping than online low bit restricted music stores anyway.

OTOH last night a flood of Richard Thompson music showed up in the binary newsgroups, but still not the one I wanted, yet.

10 bucks for 10 albums in high quality bitrates!!?! Worth a shot.

And yes, I only buy the "hard to find" albums. If you know what I mean.

Sorry for the bump of an old thread.

UPDATE: They have several formats to choose from, each with various customizable settings. MP3, WMA, OGG, AAC, MPC. Now what sites offer DRM-free selectable compression music?

Actually to bring it up again a coworker just handed this address to me like it was an oz of crack and we were making a secret deal. Never checked it out but funny to see it on here 2 days after the "deal" went down.

I love how people state this as if it were a matter of fact. The most anyone can come up with is the "If it's to good to be true" argument. AllOfMP3 has been in business for 2-3 years now and I have yet to hear or read about the RIAA taking anyone to court for using AllOfMP3 yet. I've read about them doing it with users of P2P services but never from anyone using AllOfMP3.

Now does that prove they are legal? No. But it does tell me the legality of P2P file sharing has been tested in the courts while the legality of sites like AllOfMP3 has not. What they are doing is legal...is it legal for me to use it from here in the States? I don't know....that's what has yet to be decided in any court.

Downloading free MP3's is getting expensive, going on my second big hard drive already.

Browse via newgroups.
Shop via allofmp3.com
Pay full price in a B&M store, when intel processors freeze over.

Legal in Russia, no legal precedent establishing legality in America. You can import legal "phonograph records" from Russia, but no one knows if you can import MP3s.

Well... For anybody willing to send their credit information to Russia in return for the ability to download already illegal files, I suppose this is hot. Just remember, just because you pay for the music, doesn't make it legal.

For those considering this site, I urge you to recall all the recent news headlines regarding enitities from Russia draining american bank accounts via the atm system...

Again someone stating as fact that the downloads are "already illegal files". The fact is that the downloads in Russia are legal...no one is contesting the legality of that (yet). What isn't known is if it is also legal for us in the States or other countries to download from them. It can't be assumed that just because it's cheaper it has to be illegal.

AllOfMP3 is hardly what would be considered a fly-by-night website or front to steal credit cards. They've been doing business for 2-3 years now and I think we would have heard by now if people were getting scammed from them.

It's a moot point anyways as you don't even need to use your Credit Card if you don't want. Just use PayPal.

What most people don't seem to know is that AllOfMP3 is the way all on-line music websites should be. Not because they are cheaper...but because they give you choice. You choose the bit rate/qulaity of the song. You choose what compression/file type you prefer and no DRM to be hassled with.

Well, you can also get pre-paid credit cards if you're scared of doing business with a Russian company.

I have been using allofmp3.com for a long time (several months). I have spent less than $10 total, since I download very little music, but I have never seen and frudulent activity on my credit card. I would not have any reservations about "giving" them your credit card info.

I've used allofmp3 and I am quite happy with them. I too was worried about using a Russian company, but the CC info goes to an English or American company, not Russia. Back when I first signed up with them I researched it quite a bit. I read lots of good stuff from newspapers all over Europe and US about their service. I just downloaded a few tunes last night.

Hmmm, I just went and checked and they are using a different company to process the CC payments.
