MPEG2 Authoring and Burning - No Sound?

I've been authoring mpeg2 files so I can burn them as DVDs. The original files have sound. However, after I've burned them, there is no sound. Is there something obvious that I'm missing? I'm using TMPGEnc to author the DVD and Nero 6 to burn the resulting .vob files.

I've been playing the DVDs in WMP and Media Player Classic. I don't have a standalone to experiment with.

I don't know what the deal is but you can save yourself a wasted dvdr by playing back the authored files in windows before burning. in MPC or powerdvd , just open the .ifo file that was generated on your hard drive and see if there is sound (or you can play the vobs too i think). you might also try a trial version of another dvd authoring soft to narrow down if it's tmpgenc's fault or the fault of the mpeg2. for a list, look here:

I know it's not the mpeg2's fault, because I can play those files and they have sound. Do I need a plug-in for TMPEnc or something?

well if the the mpeg's audio were out of spec somehow it may cause a problem, see specs below:
http://www.videohelp.com/dvd
this is the part you should pay attention to:
Audio:
48000 Hz
32 - 1536 kbps
Up to 8 audio tracks containing DD (Dolby Digital/AC3), DTS, PCM(uncompressed audio), MPEG-1 Layer2. One audio track must have DD or PCM Audio.

but usually tmpegenc will convert the audio if out of spec.
when you load up dvd author, select the clip you imported and hit the edit button. under "audio input format" what does it say? should look something like this:

[/URL]

it might help if you mention how you obtained these mpeg files, such as if you captured them with some software PVR straight to mpeg (if so, what software?) or if you captured avi and converted it (again, what software?)

I assume the files were from a DVR. Others who have burned the .mpgs have had no problems playing them on a standalone, which leads me to believe that the files are burned correctly, but that Windows Media Player or Media Player Classic can't decode the audio. I'll post more specifics when I get home. Thanks for your help so far.

This is so frustrating. I just re-authored the mpeg with TMPGEnc, and I previewed the .vob files it created--there was sound! Then I burned the DVD with Nero, and there's no sound when I play it in Windows Media Player or Media Player Classic. The sound file mpeg1 48000Hz 16bits 2 channels. What the $%*# is going on here?

What settings are you using in TMPGENC? If you're trying to make a DVD compliant MPEG 2 in TMPGENC, it actually splits it into 2 parts ... one is the video and the other is sound.

If you encode in TMPGENC as SVCD compliant MPEG 2's, you have one file that contains both the sound and video .... but Nero recognizes those files as "non-dvd compliant" and will re-encode those before burning to the disc.

I've used TMPGENC for years, but have recently fallen out of favor of it. If I were at home, I could specifically tell you which programs I am now using to replace it ... having a mid afternoon, sleep on the brain attack and couldn't remember anything right now even if my life depended on it. I'll respond again when I get home.

P.S. Now-a-days, I'm more likely to use TMPGENC to combine 2 or 3 mpegs if needed and let Nero do the rest ... but I do have some tools I use for specific encoding situations.

I use TMPGenc to encode to mpeg2, then TMPGenc DVD author to create the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders, then Nero to burn to DVD. The problem you're having may be due to the source material. TMPGenc won't process DVD audio as an input, such as .ac3 tracks. Mine actually hangs as soon as I attempt that. If I have an AVI that retains the original .ac3 sound, I have TMPGenc only process the video as an elemental stream, resulting in an .m2v file, MPEG2 video only. I then use VirtualDubMod to demux the .ac3 sound from the AVI, then use TMPGEnc DVD Author to knit the .m2v and .ac3 files together in an MPEG2 compliant stream, and burn the resulting .vob files to DVD. Works every time.

Good luck

Well can your pc play store-bought DVDs with sound in MPC or WMP? If not, that narrows things down alot- you might try installing ffdshow (free) in that case, or install the trial version of some other soft dvd player and see how that goes.

What kind of audio are you using? MPEG or AC3? I use AC3Filter for MPEG and AC3 audio processing - without a codec installed to process AC3 audio, WMP might not be able to recognize it.

I've got a ton of codec packs installed, most notably, the K-Lite pack that includes Media Player Classic. Store-bought DVDs will play in Windows Media Player and Media Player Classic. Interestingly, DVDs that I've authored using TMPGEnc will play perfectly in PowerDVD, but there won't be any sound in Windows Media Player or Media Player Classic.
