"full-thickness loss of posterior weightbearing surface femoral articular cartilage"

Appointment with the doc. isn't for another week and a half. I'm urgent to get an idea of what I'm dealing with. I tried googling, but got a lot of information. Anyone knowledgeable in this area want to break this down for me?

Overuse or lots of use causes knee cartilage to wear away. Osteoarthritis will be in your future as well as a knee replacement somewhere down the line once it gets bad.

Basically saying the soft tissue the bones use as cushion is all worn away and will soon be bone on bone motion.

Is there a fix?

he gave you the fix: knee replacement.

.... Again, I'm 29. I am very active on my knee currently. I don't think I'm a candidate for knee replacement. I understand 20-30 years down the road that might be the case, but I'm more talking about what do I do about it now.

surgery to regenerate/replace the cartilage is what the original wording would suggest to me but I'm not an MD so don't count on what I say.

Gotcha. That's kinda what I had figured when I did some reading on it, but it was hard to cut through the noise.

Thanks for the thoughts.

Didn't see the 29.

That's rare. Family history of similar problems? Really the only treatment is aleve. I've heard of corticosteroid shots into the joints but it only serves to reduce the inflammation. The damage really is permanent, you arent going to get the cartilage back.

You will most likely get a referral to a rheumatologist/PMR for further management. They will know more about anything new in the pipeline. I'm a 4th year student so my knowledge of such things are limited.

Partial ACL tear at ~13, combined with meniscus tear. We did the meniscotomy (sp?) but they didnt address the ACL because they said it would stunt growth plates. Continued wear/tear until about 22. Knee wasn't ever fully healthy, but I remained active. Complete ACL replacement at ~ 22. Knee was good for a few years. The last year and a half it's slowly gotten worse.

Gotcha, any sort of knee pathology especially meniscal tears will have an increased risk of this being a complication. Point being that the meniscus is what keeps things in line, if its torn or damaged then it causes loads to be shifted around to other parts of the knee that arent completely optimized for it, hence this happens.

I did quick reading and it pretty much said what I said earlier, activity reduction, aleve and some surgical treatment things that i've never heard of before to redirect the force to other parts of your knee.

There is a intra articular synvisc shot available. Don't know how effective it is in reducing pain.

Also pro athletes have been getting Growth factor and platelet rich plasma injections

Currently there is no fix. The doctor will tell you helpful things like "stay off it as much as possible."
Knee replacement is the only option and even though they're lasting longer, the docs like to drag their feet as long as possible because the joint will have to be replaced again in 10 to 15 years. Be sure to shop around for orthopedic surgeons/docs.

My advice is to live your life the way you choose and to put off surgery as long as over the counter drugs will let you then, go get a replacement.

basically means you lost serious amounts of cartilage on your femur (thigh bone) on the rear (back of knee) side.

in other words you are in for a world of hurt in your knee area.

I have osteoarthritis in my right knee and its extremely unpleasant when it flares up.

I have no cartilage in either knee. My doc gives me Orthovisc shots. They work well for me but only last about a year or two.
