ms intellimouse explorer usb probs

I have a MS intellimouse explorer and it would disconect from my usb. Sometimes it would reconnect right away, but my custom button settings would be lost and it would just operate like a 2 button mouse. Then sometimes it would disconnect and not reconnect. This doesn't happen to any of my other usb devices, so I'm wondering if it's the mouse, or possibly the motherboard or OS. I've tried using other ports and the same thing happens.

I've had two of these mice do similar things. The wires that go in to the mouse seem to get busted internally and will stop working at certain angles. Best to try to get a waranty replacement on it before it dies completely. (I threw my last one in the bin and purchased a wireless one instead).

My friends Explorer did this exact same thing to him the other day. It just started working for him again a while later. He was upset since he was hoping it could justify getting an MX700.

This may seem like an odd question, but are you running your HDs on a controller card? I am and I've found that my mouse (same one) jumps when I'm using the latest drivers for my Promise Ultra100 TX2 controller in Windows 2000 (version .34). Reverting to the previous Promise driver (version .29) clears up the problems. This is on two different computers with different motherboards.
