MS Intellimouse Optical and Win ME

I just got my cool new intellimouse optical and I installed it on win ME.
I had to download the new drivers due to the older ones on the disk would not work for ME. Intalled just fine...but something MUST be wrong.
Whenever I move the mouse fast (quickly) it does not go where I want it to go...if I shake it back and forth it just stutters in roughly the same spot.
I have reinstalled it and reloaded all the drivers...same thing...any ideas?

Try using the drivers that came with the mouse. When you try to launch the 3.1 setup, ME will tell you that they will not work. That isn't true. The fact of the matter is 3.1 drivers work better than 3.2 drivers. Just proceed with the installation and restart. If you have the same problems afterwards, I really don't know what the problem could be. Good luck.

Now that you mention it...My intellimouse does the same thing. I'm on win98SE. I'm using the drivers from the CD. it works fine until I move it extremely fast.

This is surely a problem with WinME, this as been posted a few times before also. The older drivers will not help (I and a few others have tried), it's an issue with ME, and not the optical mouse in particular, a ball mouse will do the same thing in ME.

Try turning quickly in HL from left to right, doesn't that just drive you nuts? HAHA! The only way I've found to fix the problem is to go back and use Win98SE. Until they can fix the problem, I play a lot of games (well CS and UT mainly), and having my mouse work properly is much more important then having to use WinME.

(Lucky I use Win2k now, no problems with mouse)

[EDIT]

Yes, my Logitech First + mouse (ball) would do it also, drove me insane while trying to playing CS!

Well, I've been using my optical mouse since they first came out. I play online ever night for about 3 hours or so, not once have I experience my mouse not moving when wanting to turn right or left in Win98SE, only when I upgraded to WinME did I notice this, and I only play FPS. It's very obvious when you move your mouse and noting happens.

It started happening with my mouse too once I upgraded to winME. it happens with ALL mice though (from what i've seen), even my old serial mouse. i called MS tech support, and they denied that it was their OS's fault, and told me to try updating my video card drivers (wha?? i'm already using the latest 3dfx drivers, but what would this have to do with it?)
Either way, i can't figure out a fix. Nothing is listed on MS tech support sited either.

I notice in WinME my 4th button I program to be BACK button for web surfing doesn't work. It work in Win2k. Microsoft needs to fix up WinME.

It skips cause it's optical.. the technology kinda sucks and it just does that... it's not a very fast system for quick movements or anything.. don't worry it's not ME's or 98SE's fault
had one on my comp for a few weeks. went to a Razer Boomslang 2K
wheel mice are better for now...(for gamers for sure)

While most folks think otherwise,
I, personally, am convinced that optical mice will work perfectly given the proper surface. If anyone is fast enough to make my mouse mistrack, I will eat it.

well what is the proper surface? I use a almost flat mousepad that reminds me of the 3m surface without the texture...I went for non relfective and as flat as I can get....! what do you use?????

Yes, many will disagree with you. Many have posted having this problem in WinME over the past few months. The question if it was in fact WinME or not came up many times, but one of our forum members including myself reformatted back to Win98SE and the problem went away! So you tell me? Another thing is that it doesn?t only happen to optical mice, ball mice have this problem also.

If your just a normal user meaning you just browse the internet, use you computer for word processing, use it for work related activities, school and or sending e-mails, you?ll never notice it. But if you?re a gamer, trust me you will, and that?s who seems to notice it the most. I know I did! That?s why I?m currently dual booting into Win2k and Win98SE, Win2k fir everything and Win98SE for gaming.

It?s not an issue in Win2k (not for me anyway, unless someone as saw a post?), I?ve tried it, and it moves as fast as I want it to, the same way it does in SE.

BTW: Be sure you?re using a dark mouse pad/surface.

I'm using the Explorer on my Win2k machine and haven't had any problems. I went through several mousing surfaces just for feel, not performance, and ended up using a metal Sun mousepad a friend got from work. It's perfect. I have my wife using the standard optical intellimouse on her computer and she hasn't had any problems. She's using the white laminate surface of her desk.

Aye Nox, you are correct. It was a bit confusing for me at first too, because i upgraded to winME the same day i got my new optical mouse. At first i thought it was the mouses fault (since i read about it skipping due to fast movements), but i plugged in my old SERIAL mouse, and it did the same thing! And you don't even have to move the mouse all that fast, just a hearty stride across the mousepad will make it zig-zag back and forth. But If i plug it into my laptop thats running 98, it works flawlessly.

Go to mouse properties -> pointer options. Turn on pointer acceleration on high. Set your pointer speed on the middle (5 clicks from the left).

Yeah, there is no way it's the optical mouse. I've been playing CS with the MS optical mouse since it came out under Win2k and have never had any issues at all. Infact it seems much smoother than the ball mouse I used to use and can't stand anymore. I'm just glad I read this thread and another one about WinMe's issues with dual booting to Win2k cause I was planning on doing that this week. Guess I'll just stick to 98SE/Win2k then.

Huh, works fine for me in WinME with ME drivers....but then so did my trackball. I agree with the post stating it's NOT WinME......This problem was being reported well before WinME was being used widely in both 98SE & 2000!
