MS Intellimouse Optical behaving erratically

I have a several-years-old Microsoft Intellimouse that has begun acting erratically. I have been using the "standard" mouse drivers under windows XP rather than the intellimouse software. Lately it has began freezing from time to time, sounding the "device disconnect" and "device connect" windows sounds respectively as it freezes and revives shortly thereafter. Switching USB ports does not solve the problem.

Thoughts?

I have the same mouse and recently it's been doing the same thing. I have a feeling it might be a loose wire or something somewhere, and the mouse probably needs replacement.

Bitch to M$ on their website about it. They'll probably send you a new one.

They did for me. Then I took the old one apart and fixed it.

Optical mice wear out. Simple fact, although Microsoft did acknowledge that their older intellimouses (intellimice) had some glitches that made them wear out faster.

It is not the mouse wearing out. It is an issue with the Os. Reinstall the OS will solve the problem. Probably a hack, spyware, adware or a botched update from MS causing it. I have same problem on Win7. Like I said Do a fresh reinstall of Windows. Or find someone that know what their doing like "Hijackthis" official site. either way you go about it you probably not going to repair the OS and need to reinstall anyway. make erase the drive and format it using a product like Dban to get rid and lingering hacks that reinstall themself after a simple install of windows.

P.S. This mouse is like 15 years old so wearing out excuse just don't cut it. And before you say buy a new one. Here's my reply. No they just don't build them like they used to.

the mouse cable has developed a break in one of the 4 usb lines.

if the led goes out then it is one of the power lines, if the light stays on it is one of the data lines.

squeeze the cable at various points along the length until you hear the reconnect sound or see the cursor move. that will be the fail point. you can either get a new cable and solder it in or try to splice the wire at the break.

unfortunately there isnt much of a twist in the copper or aluminum wiring they use in most mice, so if you kink or bend the cable in one place enough, the metal will harden and become brittle enough that the next flex breaks most of the wire bundle for a line.

Reinstall the OS because of a mouse? Wow! That is letting the tail wag the dog. It takes me about 3 days of work to get all programs and customizations reinstalled. No thanks!
